hi there my names steve and I have just bought a 11 week old hahns macaw called Charlie. obviously Charlie is still a baby and is very nervous and me being new to the parrot owning im nervous too ive had Charlie out of the cage a couple of times over the past 3 days of owning but I keep getting nipped hard and it is really painful! And all Charlie seems to wana do is be on my shoulder which then will lead to nipping on ears is this normal baby behaviour? will is settle down? cause im lacking more and more in confidence every day and I don't want too! please any help be much appreciated I just wana love this parrot with out having shreds taken out of me!

Many birds will be nippy at first, being in a new home is scary!

Biting can be normal in young birds, testing out the waters to see what they can get away with lol it's important not to make a big deal out of it, because some birds find that very fun. I don't know much about hahns macaw development and temperment, but the forum has several Hahns parronts who can help there.

yes young and new birds due this [and it hurts]!! I would calm your energy and be real slow around him .Like don't take him right out. Have him be curious and come to you pet his head]Slowly develop the bond [Theirs no rush].

Are you hand feeding him and is he eating enough? Sometimes they can get frustrated if hungry....

Like Echo says, is he completely weaned eating on his own? If you don't feed babies when they want formula, they will bite pretty hard! I will not allow a baby or any new bird on my shoulders if they have that biting behavior. Keep him in front of you for the time being so you can start the training process.
