Hello everyone! My current exp begins with owning cockatiels as a child and I recently owned a yellow collared macaw that just died. :(

I was able to pick up a Hanhs Macaw from my local vet for $100! He came with a cage and all of his toys as well!

My questions are as follows:

Should I leave him alone for a few days to allow him to adjust to new surroundings? He likes to sit on your shoulder a lot with no problems...

He doesn't like to be pet behind his head, is this something that could be changed? I thought most birds like that?

My old yellow collared macaw was able to be be brought outside without a harness, is this the same behavior that all macaws have or was she just special?

Any other bonding tips?

Oh, he is 2 years old if that helps.

I would definitely give the little fellow time to settle in and adjust. :) Everything is new to him at this point. New home, new sounds, new surroundings, new people....new everything. :)

I would quietly sit next to his cage and talk to him, or read to him, and try and avoid direct eye contact as he "may" feel threatened by it.

Offer him some treats and find out what he likes best.

What do you mean taking him outside without a harness? Outside as in the great outdoors? Are his wings trimmed? If so, what type of trim does he have? Can he fly at all? If he can maintain a certain height while flying, I'd be VERY cautious about taking him outside (without a harness), as a bit of wind could quickly carry him far, far away.

His wings were clipped before we left.

I was able to take my old macaw outside with no worries, even if he wings were full. We'd go to all the local festivals in New Orleans...

I know all macaws are different, but I wonder if its possible to train?

At 2 I would look at harness training him. Young birds get excited fast and will "run" off before they even know what they are doing. :D

Definitely get a harness when you take him outside! After while he'll probably learn to stay with you instead of trying to escape.Good luck to you :)

Well, I decided to test him a little bit and we went outside; just to my car and went for a ride!

He is allowing me to pet him every now and then, which from the vet staff, they said it takes awhile for him to warm up to you. To say he has only been home with me for 1 night,he sure is talking up a storm. He says hello, quack quack, peek a boo and some other things.

He does get shy around multiple people though when it comes to speaking.

Whats a proper way to potty train him? My old macaw tried her best to poop in her cage and if we went out, she would try to poop away from your shoulder so that it falls to the ground.
