Lovebird
Two days ago I brought home the sweetest lovebird. Ive had 2 bungies in the past when i was much younger but i had no ideea what owning a parrot meant so after a few weeks and many failed attepmts at befriending them that resulted in them being scared, my family gave them away to a person that had a lot of experience with birds. Since then Ive been wanting to get a bird but i waited for the right time and after a lot of research and youtube videos watched i decided to commit to a lovebird. I bought Kyo from a parrot breeder as a baby (i think hes a few weeks old), in kind of a rush since the guy was about to leave for holiday for the next month, and for the first day he had no cage but he had a great time sleeping in my room on the top of the closet where i placed him his food and water bowl along with a wooden stick perch and a small flower pot. I have a few concernes and im loooking for some answers:
1. I never saw him eating or drinking water, hes been in my room and my kitchen during the day and ive been trying to place the bowls in the same room as him but i never see him going for them
2. I build him a cage made out of wood and i used a fence like material for the cage that is made out of zinc but it has a strong layer of green paint over, i read that zinc can be extremly harmful for parrots so i was very scared when i found out and i dont know if i should change it or not since the zinc part its not accesible but still there
3. On the 2nd day, when i put his cage up on the same closet i was expecting him to have some interest in it but the only place he really stayed on was the curtain bars in both rooms.
4. I managed to get him to go in the cage when it was bed time the most gentle way i could but he ended up staying only on the cage wall hanging from his legs and beak the whole night and even fell asleep like that, refusing to go on any of the 2 perches he had in the cage, even tho i made it clear to him that the cage is his safe space and i didnt put my hand inside at any cost. I ultimately made him come out so he can sleep peacefully on the curtain bars but he never goes to the cage even tho ive tried putting the food water and treats in the cage
5. Hes been fed only seed mixes before i took him in and i tried giving him millet sticks, pistachio, fruits and veggies togheter with seeds but i havent seen him touch any of those, and im really concerned for his health
6. For some reason hes more afraid of millet sticks than the chopstick ive been using to show him places and aproach him and even my finger. I can get as close as even 5cm away from him with a stick or my finger without him minding it, but when i try to feed him millet hes flying away
7. Ive been talking to him, putting music for him i bought him toys and a separate rack that has a whole playground around it but he only pecked a few times at some shredded paper i cut up but nothing more than that
Im sorry i made this so long but im really trying to get to understand him and give him the best care i can. Also i woul love some tips on how to gain his trust and start training him
