New jenday, need help with aggression

Bought a jenday at an exotic pet expo on 3/13/22, from seller who said heā€™d only had her 2 weeks. Seller said sheā€™s cage aggressive, she was rescued from a woman who had hundreds of birds and couldnā€™t properly care for them all. He believed her to have spent her entire life in her current cage, which is now too small for her.

I have her in a spare bedroom where itā€™s quiet while she acclimates to her new home, intending to move her to our bedroom or living room once sheā€™s chilled out a bit.

Each time we walk into the room to talk to her, cover/uncover her, or do anything else, she squawks like crazy. Get close to her cage to attempt food/water changes or even offer a treat between the bars, and she squawks more aggressively and moves towards your hand in attempt to bite. After a little time spent with her getting used to your presence, sheā€™ll calm down and even accept a treat (not without a bit of hostility still).

We got her a MUCH bigger and more appropriate cage, but Iā€™m not sure how to move her as sheā€™s very territorial of her current tiny home. I get the rest of her behavior will need to be worked on over time, but I do not want to leave her in her current cage any longer than necessary. Iā€™m hoping a better cage will actually soothe her out but weā€™ll see.

Any tips on moving angry birb without traumatizing her? And any other tips for dealing with/eliminating major aggression would be nice as well. Thank you!

Hi JW,

Congratulations, she is absolutely beautiful. If you would like a slow gentle transition to new cage, recommend putting the new cage in the room with food/water and high value treats (seeds, millet spray, fruit..whatever she really likes the most). Make sure she can see you place it in there. Open doors to both cages and see what happens!

Hi JW,

She wonā€™t even come out of her current cage with a lure of treats. Sheā€™ll stand on the door threshold and lean as far as possible towards the treat, but wonā€™t step out. At one point she lost her balance, and flipped around onto the outside of the cage wall. She climbed on top the cage, ate her treat, then immediately started flailing at the cage bars trying to get back inside šŸ˜¢. Had to ā€˜shooā€™ her back towards the door.

Maybe put the cages close together and give her the day to move. If nothing happens, try again the next day. Patience is key and you will not run the risk of losing trust.

Hard transition may be faster but more traumatic for you both, they cannot see well in dim lighting. You can carefully grasp her with glove or towel and place in new cage.
