My boyfriend and I just put down a deposit on a Jardine's Parrot. We were looking for something medium sized that has the potential to talk a little bit - I read up about it and had decided to go with a Myers, but when I got to the store/breeder (I'm lucky enough to live next to the Golden Cockatoo, a wonderful breeder/retail store in South Florida) the 2 Myers that they had available didn't take to either of us. One of the employees who I have known a long time also told me her opinion - that the Jardine's that she'd met have been very sweet, family birds. We were shown two babies that had just been brought out of the baby boxes -their hatchdates were April 24 and April 26.

Well, we fell in love with one of them - the bolder and bigger of the two. We're waiting on DNA results to see if the little guy is a boy or a girl. He doesn't love being touched but will tolerate it - he does enjoy us talking to him and will take treats from us. We'll visit him regularly until we can take him home (we were told around 3 weeks, but hopefully less if he weans himself faster).

Here are some photos - I would love any stories or advice from someone who has had one of these gorgeous birds. I've had green cheeked conures, cockatiels, and a Timneh African grey in the past, but never really spent any time with a Jardine's before!

Thanks for reading/looking!

How adorable! I have always loved Jardines. Congrats!

I met all three of those birds last weekend. One of the Myers babies nailed me a good one on the finger. He was being all nice and gentle, chewing on my finger when he suddenly decided to clamp down hard. The pair still has a little bit of socializing to get the hang of but the staff there are pretty good at bringing them along.

The Jardine's were really cute and playful. I hope things go well and you have a wonderful life with him/her!

I have a meyer's. Best and sweetest bird ive ever come into contact with (not being partial either lol). Not familiar with Jardine's, but I'm sure there are members here who have them. They ought to come along shortly. Your baby is too cute. :) keep us updated!

Congratulations! What a cutie!

Love the coloring! Adorable lil birdie.

Thank you everyone for the replies! I can't wait to bring him home.

Today I went and visited the little green guy for a bit at lunchtime - he explored my fingers a bit and experimented by trying to eat my fingernails! I brought some baby carrots and lettuce with me, which he munched on for a while. He still shies away from hands touching him, although he does tolerate being stroked on the head as long as he has something to munch on. He is calmer about my hands now that I've visited him 3x.

I have to say that everything I've read about this type of parrot has been so conflicting. I did go into the store dead set on a Meyers, but the two that were there did a number on me and I was left bleeding. I'm certain that with socialization they could be very sweet, but it made me very apprehensive and my boyfriend was definitely not encouraged by the blood everywhere! The Jardines are much younger (about a month younger) and therefore were of course gentler. We were sold not only by their sweet nature, but by the employee who told us that in her experience working at the store that the Meyers that she'd known had been much nippier.

I'm not new to birds by any means - I've been bitten and gone through various stages of "nippy" with green cheeks and my Timneh African Grey. The few green cheeks that I have had had worked a number on me, moreso than my grey - but when she'd bite, it was definitely harder!

I guess all the reading I've been doing has me a little nervous. I'm no stranger to setting guidelines and working on "be gentle"...I'm also quite used to a larger beak; however, I have read a lot about how Jardines can be very nasty and it's made me quite nervous! I'm hoping that since we are working with this baby from a very early age that the guidelines we set will at least be the beginning of a solid foundation and won't leave us with constant bloodied fingers. I do love the little guy already and I hope we have a good relationship.

Anyone with a Jardine's that has some positive experiences to share?

Hello. I have got a beautiful Jardine called Lacey. She is just 5 months old. I have only had her a couple of weeks. She is my first parrot and when I bought her I knew nothing about Jardines other than I loved her instantly. I have since researched and can only validate what everyone says about them. She is as cuddly as a kitten and as playful. She is talking to me already even in my arms says hello and love you. She is Very! Intelligent! remembers everything you do so be careful she has a good memory. She runs to greet me when I come home. She is quiet and placid most of the time but has mad half hour swinging from her toys and chattering away.. She has only nipped me once and to be fair she was scared I had a baby in my arms who tried to grab her. I have no regrets whatsoever I definitely made the right choice with Lacey. She is also as you say a very attractive parrot specially when she fluffs up after I have sprayed her. Hope you get as much love and enjoyment from your little baby as I am getting from mine. Iris

Dawnkyung, I was just in the Golden Cockatoo today picking up some supplies and I believe that I was looking at your baby though I'm not sure which of the pair is the one you will be taking home. One was a little shy and would not come close to me. The other was begging to be fed. Was making a little croaking noise while nibbling at my finger. They both are very cute. :)
