Hello, my name is Tim. I'm a college student from NJ. Birds are my favorite animals, and I have been raising finches and canaries for many years with my mom. I have a 10 year old cockatiel named Sunshine, who has become our family bird. Ironically she has bonded to my dad though, who works out of state all week lol. I joined this forum because I want to own a large parrot. For a while now Ive been researching
which species is the best for me. I've interacted with different birds volunteering at an animal shelter and its hard to say which kind of bird I like best because they all can be so loving and fun to be with. I want a bird that I can form a very close bond. I have social anxiety and get along better with animals than people, so I am looking for an intelligent bird with a complex that can be my life friend and companion. I play the violin and love to listen to classical music, so a bird that appreciates musuc is a plus for me. I live at home with my parents and they have agreed to help me pay for the cost of food, toys and vet bills. Eventually I will move out, but this is not a concern. I am the type of person who would never never ever give up my animal, no matter what it takes. If anyone has a suggestion about what bird would be right for me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Tim!!! To choose a bird that's right for you is your choice, every bird is different and we can tell you all we want, but that's still our opinion and our birds alone. They're like people with all different personalities. Since you volunteer at a animal shelter you should interact with them more often. Is is an all animals shelter? If so, you should visit a bird rescue center as there would be more for you to see. Good luck in your choice!!!

Mikey gives excellent advice! If there's a rescue near you I highly recommend you go visit. You never know when the bird will pick you and when they do that's the right bird for you :)

Tim,

Welcome to the forums! There are a few great bird rescues in NJ, we volunteer at A Helping Wing in Blairstown.

Mikey gave you a great answers about the right bird is a very personal choice and no two birds even of the same species are usually the same... we have 2 bare eyed cockatoos and they are opposite ends of the spectrum, literally... And so many people have commented on the forums that when you think you have picked a type of bird that is right for you, you will go to a store or rescue and the bird that really is right for you will be the one to pick you out! Birds are better at choosing us then we are at them in my opinion :)

Good luck in your search and keep posting, we would love to hear about your adventure in finding a new family member.

An after thought... keep in mind that even if you decide on a bird, when you bring them home, they may well choose to bond more to another person. My Ivory was originally supposed to be my husband's bird, and she is an awesome family member and very social, she has ended up being my baby. Just how things go sometimes! But, many times when you meet a bird at shelter or store and they just take an instant strong liking to you, that can continue with lots of time and attention.

Good luck!!!

Hello and welcome! I also agree with Mikey and Karen - rescues are a great place to actually meet all the birds you are considering, and so many of my birds picked me instead of the other way around:) I'd love to see pictures of your current flock!

I contacted A Helping Wing about adoption and I actually scheduled a visit there for Saturday. I'm definitely excited to see the birds there
