This will be my first big bird. I have had small birds when I was younger but I absolutely love the ways amazons look and their intelligence is mind blowing. So I was curious if anyone had any recommendations on types or dos and donts for birds.

Welcome to this forum. I have a DYHA and he is perfect for me but for a first time big perrot owner it maby is to chalanging with DYHA. From what I have readet the BF is easyer to handle. Good luck finding the perfec perrot for you

Welcome to the forum:)

Amazons are wonderful Birds! I would say the DYH is the noisiest of all Zons!

Keep us updated on which one you choose.

Welcome to the forum, i'd read though some of the older post in the amazon section, tons of info there.

Indeed the DYHA is a stunning bird aswell as the other zons are aswell and i have to agree with oled the bf amazon is easyer to handle thats why i have chosen one and she will be with me in 2 month and 19 days time i can't wait to get her hope you choose the right zon for you and keep us upto date.

Read everything you can get your hands on and I mean EVERYTHING about large parrots but especially amazons. I have a YNA male who was a rescue and my first large parrot. I was either insane or stupid when I agreed to take him in because he has been a HUGE challenge. I wouldn't trade him for ANYTHING, but if I said he was all fun and games all the time I'd be a big fat liar.

I think amazons are great birds, I think they are also pushy, bossy, demanding birds and they require someone who can handle them AND deal with the inevitable hormonal periods twice a year (and the utter hell of adolescence if you get a baby) without losing their minds or getting their feelings hurt.

Also, all the research in the world won't prepare you, necessarily, but you'll be more prepared than if you just went into it blind without reading everything you could get your hands on first.

Please forgive the preachiness of this post - we have gotten SO MANY amazons into the rescue over the past year because people didn't know what they were getting into and it really chaps my hide. These birds can be great companions, but with the right person. They're not for everyone.

Check out amazon training video's also its should help you more but lizardsmells is right no amount of research can prepare you for what a zon brings lol

Look for a parrot that you like the colors of. Sassy is a Yellow Shouldered Amazon, friendly most of the time, looks some what like a Double Yellow Headed Amazon for the yellow on face and light beak. She is only 13 inches long so not a big Amazon but still will live 70 years or longer. She plays with me, crawl up my shirt when laying in my lazyboy, she talk but not as good as Blue Fronts or Yellow Napes. All Amazons talk but some are better than others. Sassy says Hello, What you doing, Pretty Girl, Pretty Bird, barks like a dog, wolfe whistles, sneezes.. They run anywhere from $700 to $1000.. Yellow Shouldered Amazons are listed on Cites as Apendix ll, meaning vounerable.. Alot of parrots are listed on Cites. Choosing a parrot is a life time commitment.

I stayed away from amazons for years because of the reputation. I ultimately came across a wonderful yellow crowned amazon. They are typically a little calmer (quieter and more laid back than some of the other amazons).
He is a little pushy (as stated above) but all in all a sweet/loving animal.

From the amazons I have been around in the past, I would recommend the yellow crowned.

Best of luck to you. I would take the cautions and warning to heart, but if you are willing to make the commitment they can be great life-long companions.
