Hahns Macaw
We were deciding on which bird to get and narrowed it down to a Senegal, Blue Headed Pionus, Pocket Parrot or a Hahns Macaw. After much research and many trips to different breeders we decided to get a Hahns Macaw. We picked him up on Saturday from Parrots of the World. It is a local shop on Long Island NY. The owner has been on numerous Q&A TV shows and he had a 9 week old Hahns Macaw. He is not fully weaned yet but he is picking up and chewing various food. Looking forward to raising him properly.

Welcome! I have always loved those little macaws. Very cute little fellas. Good luck with your new baby.

Thank you. I am heading to the library to grab a few books, not sure which ones but I figure the more I read the better it will be.

Good luck! Hahn's seem like great birds. I've been to POTW many, many times, though I've never bought a bird there. Their selection is great and Marc is very knowledgaable and friendly.

Wlcome to the server, actually last saturday I picked up my little Hahn's! I already potty trained her, and she found her voice too!

Thanks, I would love to attempt to potty train him. We finally got around to naming him.... Ozzie. He does not make much noise at all yet, just what sounds like some low volume grunts, but he is starting to step up. I just ordered some Harrison's High Potency Fine pellets and I hope they arrive before he is weaned.

Congrats on your new bird. How lucky you are to live close enough to visit this shop. I love Mark Marrone, he has a great show I watch on the Hallmark Channel. He has great ideas about parrots, has really helped me to understand Merlin better. Would love to see pictures.

Thanks, working on the pictures. I haven't seen any of Marks new shows, but he used to be on local channels all the time and the show was very informative. It was not solely about birds. The store had so many birds to choose from and Mark was great. He let us hand feed the bird and eased or worries about which species to choose.

Well welcome to you both. Hahn's are the best fun. I have a young pair, although they live in an aviary outside. Future Breeders i hope. But i just can't believe how well the male can talk, he learns new words every day.

The only bad about them is they can tend to be a little nippy oh & they can be quite loud at times. But they are very cheeks little guys.

Another Hahns owner.YAY...I just adore my hahns macaw.....he is an excellent little talker..does your little one make noises as he is falling asleep?
I love watching Marks show but I have to say I am a little surprised that they would sell an unweaned baby....either way....good luck and post some pics when you can...they are such dolls...congrats on your new family member.

I hope to have him socialized enough where he won't be too nippy, I do have a 5 year old son and I do not want him to get bit then never interact with him out of fear. We are having him help with the hand feedings.

He doesn't really make much noise at all yet unless he is hungry. It does sound like he is trying to say step up!!!

My little guy is two years old and he has never liked to be touched...he wants to be with me, and on me all the time but if I touch him, he nips....he has come a long way with that after being worked with...yesterday he actually let me help him with some of the pin feathers on his head.....I was so happy he let me do that.
Can't wait to see pics of your little one.

He has been pretty good about touching him, but it is my understanding that they get nippy once they realize that they can "discipline us" with their beaks. I will post a pic or two tomorrow
