New green cheek conure help

Ok hi I just bought a green cheek conure from the pet store yesterdaythey told me that the hatch date was in 2006 so that would make him around 4 years old anyways I know I bought him Kinda old but he was so sweet in the pet store compare to the other younger ones but yea here's my PROBLEM now that were at home it's very hard to get him out the cage he squeaked a couple of times like he wanted to bite but when I open the top of the cage he will fly out and land on my hand if I put it in his path so I know he doesn't mind being on my hand n and he ll let me rub his back n his head and let me hold me against my chest! Please any advice on how to get him out the cage calmly............ALSO he will eat a millet spray from my hand but nothing else I tried to feed him a sunflower seed but he just knocks it out my hand over n over and same with the peanuts and all other foods ....so please help that's...:n

Welcome to the world of bird ownership! (or rather, being owned by a bird lol) I absolutely adore my little GCC, they're such great birds.

Best advice I can give you? Pick up the book "Parrots For Dummies". GREAT resource for those new to birds as well as those more "seasoned" avian friends.

Second piece of advice: give it time. It took my GCC almost two weeks before she'd take a treat through the bars, now a month later she's a little Velcro-bird! It sounds as though your GC is a bit cage territorial - you can either work around it and let him come out/step up on your hand on his time (probably best if he's new to the house and finds his cage a place of solace in a scary new world), or you can try rearranging the toys and layout of his cage to confuse him a bit.

It sounds like you have a little lover though. You got him not too long after he's reached sexual maturity, so there'll be some issues there that you'll have to be mindful of, but I think that's for another day. Right now, even if he is being a "good" bird, still try to let him settle in to his new home and surroundings before making any demands on him. This could take a week, a month, maybe more - you're on your way for now if he let's you pet him (this could also be the "honeymoon" period in the beginning so if he gets standoffish in the next couple weeks don't take it personally).

I had/having the same issue you are having. My GCC was at the pet store for 2 years. Bebe would not come out of her/his cage. I think that Bebe was in the cage all day/everyday for so long that she didn't feel safe anywhere but the cage. She came out for a minute then wanted back in the cage. It's been a couple of week and she is spending more time out of her cage. Tonight she was out for over an hour! I think patiences and time with your new baby will pay off for both of you.
I just got the "Parrot for Dummies" book. I'm only a few pages in so I can't comment yet.
