- Blaze ~ Sun Conure
Hello everyone of Parrot Forums! I have been poking around for quite some time and finally decided to make an account for myself considering I just got myself a wonderful bird. I found most of the things I needed to know right here.
Well, my name is Kaitlyn. I'm a college student majoring in Animal Science. I've loved animals my whole life, and I've never been without a companion of my own. The only exception was when I moved in with my boyfriend. I wasn't able to bring my cat with me so she stays at home with my mother, who I go to see every weekend. After a few months, I started to feel a bit empty. Class occupied me during the mornings, but the afternoons were slow and quiet. I realized I wanted a pet. Getting my guy to agree was another matter.
It took a month or two of asking and suggesting. I kept doing my research of possible pets, always explaining facts in hopes to persuade him. When I bought him a ball python for Christmas, my yearning grew stronger because it seemed like everyone I knew was getting a new pet of their own. Once I finally got that coveted 'yes,' I started visiting the local Petco to see who could be a good candidate.
Initially, I had my heart set on a dog and went to the shelter first, but sadly, none really captured my heart. Since the landlord didn't want dogs over 25 lbs, I had to stick to smaller breeds, but I'm particular when it comes to small dogs. I also had to try and find one my boyfriend liked too. He eventually suggested waiting until we could move out of our apartment house, saying we could have a breed we both really wanted when that happened. It was frustrating, but I was willing to give it time. Then, I started looking at other animals.
I had my heart set on ferrets or a snake of my own. One of the Petco employees is familiar with me and frequently offers to let me hold the animals when there's time. I fell in love with a Children's Python, but that all changed when I passed by the birds. Now, I knew very little about them. During my childhood, I went through a brief period where I wanted a parakeet, but it didn't last long. I couldn't help but be drawn to the sun they had. It was the only one that waddled up to the glass to see me. Intrigued, I started looking up information about conures.
Since I'm in an apartment setting, I planned on a Green Cheek for their reputation for being quieter than Suns. However, Petco didn't have any. I wasn't sure how to find breeders, and I know trying to speak with one would just make me nervous. All the while, I kept learning and visiting that Sun in the store. I tried telling my guy about them as best I could, and he was sold on the idea of having a bird. After talking the pros and cons over, I decided on getting the Sun, wanting to put my training skills to the test.
The day I got her, the employees congratulated me and insisted she was a sweet bird. She rode on my shoulder the whole ride home. I named her Blaze, and she's surprised me in more ways than one.
She's not loud for a conure. I've seen videos of them and listened to the screaming. Now, she's screamed quite piercingly a few times, but it was only when both my boyfriend and I left the room. Other than that, she hardly squawks. Blaze is most vocal when she's underneath my chin, letting out these quick chittering noises and twitching her wing. This has been since the first day. She eats just fine and gets about 13 hours of sleep.
Though she's only 6 months old, there's a certain intelligence to her. She won't get loud on my shoulder unless she wants something like food or to use the bathroom. Oh, she came to us potty-trained too! Big bonus! She's learning how to use her "inside voice," and she hangs upside down in her cage to get my attention so I can go take her out. Silly bird.
I apologize for the length, but I never thought this experience would be so amazing! Blaze has really brightened up my life. I hope to post some pictures soon here on the forum. She's pretty photogenic. For now, I'm off to cuddle with my featherbaby.
