My boy Cal is getting a TON of new feathers on his face. Like, a TON! He's a rescue, and bits fingers in his face or around his head (hard!), so I'm wondering A. Is this amount of new feathers normal, and B. Is there any way I can help him/make him comfortable while they grow in??

Thanks!
Anne and Cal

Attached here is a picture. He was a little cranky with me because it was after bedtime and I just got home from being away for the weekend. :orange:

It is rather normal!

If Cal wont allow you to help him preen then you can always just give him extra baths to help loosen the keratin sheaths!

Those are just pin feathers. Perfectly normal. Baths and preening will help. He is beautiful!

It looks normal to me as well, how old is Cal???

Ok I'm glad! MikeyTN, we don't know - vet told us under 5 he thinks. Our friends found him and we took him in, and his feathers were full but sparse in some areas (I assume because he had been out in the elements). I've had birds in the past, but not with so many coming in at once, so I freaked haha.

Because of his past (unknown!), he is hard to handle (has some cage aggression sometimes, won't step up sometimes, is hard to get off your chest or shoulder, etc.), so giving his little pin feathers a rub won't be an easy task lol.

Thanks for the compliments! He's a work in progress but he's such a good boy :)
