New Cockatoo

I brought my little guy home last night. He was in a aviary and not in a house. All the home stuff is new to him.
He is 4 today. Of course he would not eat or drink. Today he is not eating, drinking or doing anything.
Just sitting in one spot and turning around sometime.
Yesterday he weighted 575 today 565. How long should I wait before I try hand feeding him.
I know it takes time but I don’t want him to get weak and sick.
Do you have any ideas that you can share? It would really be helpful.

I would take the bird to an avian vet asap.

Not eating/drinking is a problem. What are you feeding him? What was the previous owner feeding? At 575g, is it an Umbrella or Sulpher Crested?

If you have changed his diet, you might try to go back to whatever he was eating before you put him on pellets.

Did you have a checkup with Avian vet yet? The bird may just be rattled by the sudden shift in living space ...loss of parrot buds...new food...new...but something else could be going on. Do you have access to a vet?

I never like seeing a bird go more that 24 hours without eating, however you really must try and at least get some liquids in him or he will dehydrate, you say he just turned 4, is that weeks, months, years?, if its years he surely knows how to eat and drink on his own, younger and I can understand the question of handfeeding, if you have an Avian Vet I would call him/her right away and ask their advice, baring that I would contact the breeder or person that you recieved the bird from for some advice, if he was housed with other birds in the aviary it could that he's not eating because of seperation anxiety, at this point fluid intake should be a priority, please keep us updated on how you make out.

Glad that he is eating now. Did your vet have any other advice to help with the transition into your home from the aviary?

Lucky you Brenda, glad to hear he's doing better, are you in the U.S.?

His advise was to take everything slow and weight him every day around the same time Call him if his weight dropped 10%.

Just curious, what kind of food are you feeding him?
If he's on seeds, you should really consider feeding him pellets.

ZuPreem Parrots & Conures pellets, Higgins Safflower Gold, Addition sunflower seeds, pine nuts and other nuts, Higgins Boca Nuts all. He just wants to eat seeds and nuts with a few other things.
He does not eat veggies and fruit yet.
Oh, I will be very happy when he is eating 50% pellets. They need nuts in their diet.
