I just recently bought a 21 year old umbrella cockatoo, she is such a sweetheart. I bought her a bigger cage than she was used to and have made a nice play stand out of Mongolia tree branches. She doesn't seem to like the stand as it has toys hanging here and there. I cannot get her to play with anything not even a paper towel roll. She just wants to sit. Is there something else I should try.

congratulations on your new cockatoo.. would love to see pics! :)
how long have you had her for? she may not be interested in her toys until she is settled in.. :)

ok there is 2 ways (that i know of :p)
click go advanced and next to the smiley face there is a little folder thing. click that, choose the pic, upload, then click manage attachments and click it, and that will add it into the message..
orrrr
go onto your profile, add an album, add pics, then use that [image] link that will be under the pic and paste it in the chat box !
:)

aw she is very cute.. and a fun looking play stand.. just be patient with the toys, she is older so it will take longer to adjust.. im sure she will be having fun with them in no time :)

I was just worried she just mainly hangs onto the side of the cage and runs her beak back and forth through the bars

is this when you are in the room or at all times?
and was she a rescue or did you just get her off someone who could just no longer look after her

They had her since she was a baby they said, not sure how they could have gotten rid of her. pretty much most of the time she hangs on the side of cage going from side side rubbing her beak

im not sure on this behaviour, im no expert haha.. but im guessing she is just missing her old family a lot..
just try thinking how she feels.. 21 years with a family, and now shes in a new environment with no one she knows! must be heartbreaking for her!
just talk/sing/read to her and give her treats.. it will probably take her a while to adjust, but the wait will be worth it, she looks so sweet :)

Awww she's precious!

As for the hanging and rubbing her beak.....mine do something similar when they are nervous or unsure of something....(this is not often...lol)

Probably just nerves from the move....I'm sure she will settle in and be playing in no time.

Congrats on giving her a home!

How long have you had her?

If she is 21 & was with her prior family for 2 decades, it will take her a while to adjust. She may be missing them - a lot.

I'm sitting here with a 21 year old macaw on my shoulder - he had 1 home his entire life, until he moved here in January. He is an easy-going, happy guy - who had a terrible time adjusting to a new home after he had been so happy in his prior home for so many years.

It took about 6 months before he went from merely polite to happy to see me.

My best advice - wait on her. In a couple months, you'll notice a change, and several months after that, an even bigger change.
