A Male Budgie called Stormy age 2
A Male Budgie called Sparky age 8 weeks
We got a new budgie after our little Echo passed away. A little boy called Sparky. He was from a breeder. We messaged him on Facebook and he said he had one male left and we could go over the next day to pick him up. The morning we were due to go over there he messaged to say he had to take him out of the bigger cage because another budgie had pulled some of his wing feathers out. We agreed to still have him.
We went over to the guys house and into his aviary and it was clean and setup well. The budgies all looked well fed and watered. The budgie we decided to have was in a smaller separate cage. He's not able to fly properly because of the feathers being pulled out. We noticed one of his tail feathers was also missing.

We took him home and put him into his new cage. He is super tame. He steps up, he takes millet from my hand, he let me pick him up to check his nails too.

I woke up this morning and I noticed his other tail feather had fallen out. Could this have been damaged during the fight with the other budgie but took a bit longer to come out? It doesn't look like he's plucking.

My questions are, how long will his wing and tail feathers take to come back and is there anything I could be feeding him to help with this process? He isn't used to vegetables yet but I'm working on it! He's currently got Haiths tip top budgie seed with dried spinach and aniseed oil which he seems to really like. He's also eating and drinking really well. He is currently being isolated from our other budgie.

I've attached before and after pictures of his current wing feathers.

Thanks

Awwwwwwwww, welcome Sparky, you're such an adorable baby!! Highly likely that the other tail feather was damaged, either by a fellow nestling or just cos young birds are pretty rough on their feathers. I don't think there's much else you can do to hasten regrowth other than what you're already doing. Budgies moult into their adult feathers at around 3 or 4 months of age, but you may find those pulled feathers start to come back a little sooner. Congrats @Dantheparrotdad, Sparky is lucky to have found such a loving home with you!!

Thank you for your kind words and advice. it is very appreciated. We are currently attempting a bedtime routine which is interesting! My youngest daughter is 13 soon so I haven't had to be firm with a stubborn toddler for many years now. Sparky is now that stubborn toddler 🤣

I'm so glad you took him. Sounds to as if you're doing it right! Stick with us.

Sparky, you handsome little darling, behave!

I was hoping someone could shed some light on something Sparky is doing. I've had comments like he is showing me he's friendly and he wants petting to Pneumonia! Vastly different theories.

He starts and stops the clicking of his beak but he is breathing a little heavier in the video. He did just try to fly to me shortly before shooting the video.

This forum has been really helpful so I've attached a video.

Thanks
