Gilbert Oliver, Blue Crown Conure; Georgie, Sun Conure (2/8/01-8/8/12) RIP little girl; Percy, budgie 1993-1999. RIP Pepito-spanish timbrado canary
In all my grieving the loss of my Georgie (sun conure), i couldn't bear to be down to just one bird (my canary). I had 5 at one point, and my house sounds almost eerie to me without those bird sounds.
soooo.....i have been thinking which bird would fit the best with me, my home, our family, and be happiest with us and i decided on a blue crown conure. My only problem was finding one because they seem scarce anymore. I found a beautiful baby boy and put a deposit on him today!!
I will soon have a new conure in my family.
Any blue crown lovers, feel free to give me any pointers you may have. I got so used to my sun conure girl that she and i made perfect sense to each other. This will be a new adventure for us.

Awww, i wish you and you future baby conure the best of luck, they are beautiful birds!

Blue crowns are great birds. Though they don't have the most pleasant squawks among conures, they do have some great soft noises. Some low purrs and a high pitched noise when they are cuddling or preening.

Watch the diet. Both of mine tend to want to gain weight so I have to carefully monitor what I feed them and how much. Vet advised me to "stuff em" with green vegetables to help keep the weight in check. Rosco likes them. Tootsie....not so much though she was on a seed only diet when I adopted her.

Their beaks tend to get a long, thin, sharp point on them so you might have to trim it down once in a while. It can easily pierce skin when it is sharp. I was speaking with my vet about it this past weekend when I had Tootsie in for her annual checkup and it seems that it is a species trait more than other birds.

They are intelligent so keep him busy with toys and puzzles. I think they are good candidates for training if you want to do tricks. I easily poop trained Tootsie. My guys differ in how they play with their toys. Rosco is a chew it up and destroy it type. Tootsie is a bird that loves to explore different textures with her tongue. Toys with a dense material might be best. Rosco destroys soft leather and paper toys very fast.

Having a blue crown around is generally a great thing. Having two of them sometimes gets a bit much in the noise category. But I love having my pair.

Good luck with your baby!

My sun conure used to occasionally get noisy. When she was young, in her 'terrible twos', she could be a hellraiser with noise. She ended up on the normal to calm/quiet side, which is obviously never quiet. I'm eager to find out all the sounds of the blue crown. i know they have a similar call but it is less 'metallic'....more cackly if i recall. I am so happy to hear yours wasn't bad with potty training. I tried without success to potty train my sun conure. She was great with playing dead, 'brushing her teeth', giving kisses when i told her to, but she wanted to potty wherever she pleased! If i can potty train my blue crown, wow, that would be excellent. Thanks

Just remembered something that you can use to "communicate" with the blue crown. They have a recognition behavior among them. They do a series of slow bows then quickly raise up straight. I used to do it all the time with Tootsie before I adopted Rosco. But it makes Rosco upset if I do it cause he thinks I'm making a move on his buddy and he bites at Tootsie's feet. I just put my hands behind my back, slowly bow to the bird over about a second and a half time period while keeping eye contact then I stand up straight over a half second. Doing it will get a similar response and pinned eyes along with her low "berrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noises out of Tootsie every time. Tootsie and Rosco both start the behavior with each other at least once a day.

There are a pair of blue crown babies at my favorite bird store right now and I tried doing it with them the last time I was there. One was not interested at all but the other did a kind of quick half bow towards me each time I bowed to him. So it seems like it is something that they know instinctively.

I think one of the customers there thought that I was nuts but I believe the staff realized what I was doing. ;)

I've seen our blue crown do that to many of us, and didn't realize that. He does bow when he says goodbye to people. Our blue crown is very intellegent, and is always keeping busy. He also talks a lot.

Interesting. I'll have to try the bow. Georgie used to make the "happy hiss" sound when she would give kisses and snuggle, and sometimes if i just walked over and put my head near where she was in the cage and made the "happy hiss", it made her seem so content.

Also interesting is the weight thing!! Georgie ran lean. I had her eating Harrison's pellets and then some veggies and fruits and pasta/rice, and when i brought her for a physical (years ago), she was slightly underweight, low protein. We had to bulk up her diet and then she was fine. I guess it just shows how important the physicals/bloodwork can be to keep them from getting ill.

congradulations! BCC are great birds, please post pics when u get him :)

Congratulations!! You are going to have a wonderful companion. I don't have much experience with them, but we just adopted an 11 yr old BCC and he is a joy. He is still settling in, but he fit right in and is a happy, chatty, very intelligent, silly guy.
I wish you all the best. Can't wait to hear all about him when he arrives.
