New bird troubles?

Lately, I have been thinking about getting another bird. A cockatoo, actually! I've done lots (I tell you lots) of research on this bird as a pet. It won't be for a while (around feb next year) but I was wondering what effect a new bird would have on my Sun Conure? She's bonded to me, and hasn't really seen any other domesticated birds in her lifetime. I'm very worried, when this new bird does come in, she'll become territorial and attack the new bird or become stressed and pluck feathers. Ruby gets around 6-8 hours of attention a day (from me). I'm in school at the moment, but my family is home throughout the day to give her plenty of cuddles I'm also worried that I'll lose my bond with Ruby if I add another bird. Any suggestions/tips would be great!

Very sad! But, if you are a true Too person, for sure, there is one that desperately needs you!

Personally, and others that have owned to 2 unlike me will possibly disagree, but I don't think conures and too's sound like they'd mesh well together. Too's are very child like and attention seeking but conures are too. Plenty of people can handle 2 birds or 2 kids bissing for attention but can you handle it?

I'm a one bird home so I am bias but can you promise the same kind of attention to your conure when you'll have a Too wanting the rest? Too can be very demanding (like any bird).

I agree 2 needy birds could be hard to handle. Do you have help? If you have another person at home with you that could help it could work. I think taking on a Too would be a lot your little green cheek might get neglected on accident. I don't see these 2 birds being good at sharing their person. I am sure it can be done but it will take lots of time. If you have lots of extra time it could be fun. I have 2 dogs and my conure. Spliting my time between the dogs and the bird is what I do it takes a lot of time. My daughter and husband help out too so it's not so hard.

You didn't mention what kind of cockatoo you have in mind? Are you considering a baby chick from a breeder or do you want to adopt an older bird? If you are planning to get a baby chick, please do even more research on training. A lot of Toos are spoiled rotten during their first years and given no boundaries whatsoever, then they grow up and a lot of them will be rehomed again and again throughout their long lives. This is the fault of the human not the chick. Cockatoo chicks have those huge liquid eyes, they will melt all over your shoulder and tuck their sweet faces under your chin, incredibly hard to resist. When they get older and the humans see behavioral changes their attitude often changes, the Too knows this and becomes more clingy, frustrated and insecure. All baby Toos need lots of care and attention but teaching them to play and entertain themselves makes for a much more stable companion.

I'm glad you're giving this huge decision plenty of time and lots of thought.

I was thing about adopting a sulphur crested cockatoo, or goffins cockatoo. Both are at a local bird shelter, and are sweethearts! We don't know how old the goffins Too is, but she's quite old. We think that the Sulphur Crested Too is around 30-35, and we're not sure on the gender either. DNA tests come back next week!

Both birds were somewhat neglected in past homes, and I was hoping to give one of them a second chance at life. There's also a super sweet Macaw at the shelter I volunteer at, and maybe he would be a better suit for my situation. Here goes round two of bird research! The Blue and Gold macaw is around 1.5 years old. I'm giving the decision time, and lots of thought. All the birds at the shelter are well aquatinted to other birds, and I would love to give ALL of the birds new homes, but sadly, I cannot do that

OH NO you volunteer at a shelter. HAHA J/k. I worked at an SPCA. If you work at a shelter you are going to end up adopting something. It is awesome. Your heart is in the right place and you have experience. Keep meeting birds and keep doing your research when the right bird comes along just get it. No need to rush.

Can I ask a question, and try to answer it honestly. What about your Sun Coure is not meeting your parrot needs? We are a 1 bird house, and could not see how another parrot would be a good thing. Yes, there are many house holds who cann pull it off.... most cant and wind up re-homing the second bird after awhile, and maybe the first one too, because you have f...ed with his head. Think how the first will feel. His mainbuddy is spending time with this stranger...

Me, if I was a rich guy, I WOULD have lots of parrots, and time to play with each one.
Everyday, and take them on vacation to my Island and in my Plane.

My Sun at the moment seems pretty happy. I have brought home one or two birds to spend the night when we can't find cages, and she doesn't seem to mind, as long as she is attended to first. I guess she likes to think she's the 'alpha' or the flock, and must be played with first. She gets fed first etc. I think she enjoys the company, as when I'm gone, she really only has my dad (who has her out around 2-3 hours a day). The Macaw at the shelter (whose name is Indi) came from a great home, but her owner was diagnosed with cancer and she couldn't give the bird the attention she needs (and deserves). We've had many offers for Indi, but maybe I could take her home? Or maybe bring Ruby to the shelter and introduce her to Indi, and see the reaction.

I'm seriously considering bringing Indi home in the future. She's super sweet and hasn't bitten (hard). It won't be anytime soon, but maybe I could schedule some 'playdates'? Hopefully all goes well, and they get along.
