Baby Galah: Raime (F)
We picked up our baby Galah at the airport today and she is wonderful! She is 5 months old and weaned but has been having a little trouble perching and climbing. Her first time parents bit off the end of 3 of her toes when she hatched. :( We moved all of her perches down but she has been trying to climb the cage and falling. I'll buy her a ladder tomorrow. She is ignoring her soft rope perch and perching on her food bowl. :)

She tweeted when we picked her up at the airport and smooshed up to me on the way home. She keeps pushing up to the cage so we can touch her. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can hold her a little. She had orange slices and seed in her carrier but still ate dinner and drank water in her new cage.

Two more questions; she is still awake, eating and climbing around her cage. It is dark and quiet in the great room where her cage is but I'm worried about leaving her alone when she's awake. Should I bring her in the bedroom with me?

And my other question is that I found a bigger cage that is 36" X 28" X 65" that we can get right away. Does that sound big enough? Some awesome Galah people were advising me about the cage size. Thank you!

I forgot; we named her Blossom. :) It was a compromise.:grey:

Oh congrats and I love the name how appropriate. Ican't answer your question but I bet you have trouble sleeping tonight due to the excitement. HEHE:D

i had both my birds in my room the first two nights when they were with me, just so they could hear my voice and knew who was in the room with them, and so they could adjust to their new room during the day. not sure if thats the right thing to do, but it didn't seem to have scr3wed them up in any way :D

Couple accepted our bid today on a HUGE cage that we are picking up this weekend. It's 50" wide, by 39" deep by 68" high and all of the bars are horizontal for our girl! Thank you to the other Galah people who turned me in the right direction about cage size!

Make sure she can't stick her head through the bars. I woud assume that most large bird cages are safe for a galah. However, with super sized cages like that you might want to check it out. Also, a night light might help calm her down some at night.

It's possible that she may not get on a rope perch due to the toes. Ropes are difficult to balance on as it is. Recommend getting some flat perches. Regardless she will lead a normal life. Also, careful with the orange slices. They can eat them but you don't want to feed them too much due to the acid.

The cage has 1" bar spacing, thankfully! I am looking for those flat perches now. :) I would like it if I could also find the fleece slipcovers for them. My problem now is that we have a stand for her with a natural wood perch but I don't know how well she'll be able to grip it. I don't think I would have bought this type if I had known. The breeder told me she had "no problem perching." That's true if I only have skinny things I guess.

Love galahs! I love, love, love the name!! Pictures please!

I posted 2 pics in the Cockatoo gallery. Love Goffin's and the name "Mozart" too! We took care of a Goffin's for a week and fell in love! That's how we ended up with Blossom. I was searching for one of the smaller Toos and found this special needs baby. :) And brianlinkles do you have your Moses yet?
