I am not an experienced bird owner but I have done a lot of reading and I know I have so much more to learn! I pick up my baby on Wednesday. He/she is about 14 weeks.
Any advice on bringing him home would be appreciated.

New Senegal Mommy

I pick up my new baby on wed! I am so nervous and excited!

Congratulations on the new baby!

I don't have any experience with baby parrots since I've always adopted older ones. But as your bird grows and you see the senegal personality emerge I'll be happy to try to answer questions as best as I can.

Congratulations on your new baby! I love Pois.. I have 2 close relatives of the Sennie :).

Congrats and welcome!

I'd be interested in hearing exactly when your milestones occur, eg. starts talking/mimicking words, first molt, etc.

I wish there was better data on this stuff for Pois.

Hi Newbsi,

make sure there is water and some food in the cage. If the journey home is more than an hour make sure you take a stop or two to interact with your baby and reasure it that everything is fine.

you can also cover the travel cage with a cloth to calm it down if the bird is too nervous when the car is moving. I hope this helps. Anguel

Luckily its only a 45 minute drive home but I will cover his/her cage, I did not think of that. I am sure I will be saying that a lot very soon!
As far as the milestones, I sure will. I admit I am nervous! I want to make this as easy as possible for the new one but with my lack of experience, I think the baby will need to have patience with ME more than I will him.
He kinda chose me actually. When I went to the breeder to meet the babies, I was actually going to get a cockatiel. Brought the cage in and everything. But this Senegal Baby flew to me! Then she put him back and a minute later he tried to fly into the cage I brought! He was saying, TAKE ME, TAKE ME! Sighs, how could I resist that! The Senegal baby wasnt ready to leave yet, so I have to go back this Wed!

Congrats on your new baby! We must see pics! ;)

Just make sure you have everything ready for her.

Cage, food, toys. Use natural branches as perches instead of dowel perches. Senegal's love to chew, so some nice wood toys as well as an enrichment toy. How big is your cage? You will need at least 3 bowls, one for wet ingredients (i.e.. fruits/veggies) one for water, and one for dry (i.e.. seed, pellets - personally I prefer golden feast products)

Nice to hear she has fledged... since she flew to you.. are you planning of clipping her or keeping her flighted?

I think I will keep her clipped for now, just to be safe.
I attached a picture of the cage that should be here tomorrow for us to put together. the inside measurements are 24x22x38. Bar width was 5/8 or 3/4. I have all kinds of toys and perches of sizes and textures. I got a water bottle to use as well as the cup until I know which she prefers. I got the pump mister thing for baths. roudybush food, treats, millet. Its like setting up a nursery. Although I over estimated on my travel cage, I think it is too big. its about 15x18x20 oops.
I did get a table top stand but I do not have a tall or hanging stand yet. I have been searching and searching for something that is what I am looking for. I think I will have to make it.

Nice cage... Love the play top, and i think 15x18x20 is a great size for a travel cage.... the roomier the better. :)

I prefer an organic pellet, but Roudybush is fine, you can use it for her to nibble on throughout the day, but not as her main food. Make sure your giving her a varied diet that made up on lots of fresh organic veggies and some fruit, everyday... I use millet for times when my bird is sick or stressed out. Millet is a comfort food, Kiwi would be a "millet junkie" if I allowed it, she loves it. She would only eat millet if I put it in her cage. So I limit her millet to the times when she is under the weather or stressed. She does get millet in her Goldenfeast though.

There are some really good chop recipes on here. I don't have the link, but someone may supply it or just type in chop recipes in to the search.

I think your on the right track.... theres a wealth of information on this forum. Sennies are great birds.
