Parrots
Charlie the birdie, yellow naped amazon and little bird, a monk parrot , and Polly -yellow crowned amazon
Charlie has a new buddy. A friend of a friend has reached the point where he can no longer cae for his late mother's amazon. He had asked me a couple of years ago if I could take care of polly when the time came and of course I said yes. Well the time has arrived and so has polly. Polly's "mom" passed away about four years ago and she has not really been handled since then. Polly is about 35-40 years old and she was hatched from an egg that mom's older parrot laid. She has been in the same home her entire life. She has only been on one car ride (traveling to my house yesterday ) She has never been to the vet and wasn't raised on pellets but on seed and bread and bananas (with some table food as well) Polly's cage cover is a greasy feeling, filthy old table cloth. Her feathers feel greasy also and she doesn't seem to be preening her feathers, she looks really ragged. Polly is scared and lost, any advice on how to help her settle in and not be so traumatized by all the changes?

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons!

Please take the time to read the first Thread, here in the Amazon Forum. You will find that this Thread will provide you with an operational understanding of what your new Amazon is presenting and will help greatly in limiting miss-steps. Also read as many of the Threads in this section, starting with the most recent and then further back as time is available. What you will find is that many of your questions have been covered in the recent past Threads.

Your Amazon's world has been shifted up-side-down and stability will be one of the targets in recovery of it's world.

In the near future, It would be wise to get your Amazon into your Vet to determine its medical status.

The subject of diets is one of those 'hot topics,' having said that, target getting your Amazon on a well-balanced diet with a very wide cross-section of food sources, including fresh greens, etc... This diet base will provide stimulation / enrichment that your Amazon needs and will enjoy.

It would appear that both your Amazon and its cage needs a good shower and getting your Amazon out of its cage will be part of that process.

Once again, reading the Amazon Forum Threads will address the majority of your questions. We look forward to hearing your adventures in the Wonderful World of Amazons!

Confratulations to you and to Polly. She's beautiful, I'm sure she'll start to thrive in no time with all the positive changes. She appears to be fully feathered, a better diet and frequent baths and those gorgeous feathers will really start to shine.

Thank you for sharing this lovely story and photos of your new addition.
