2 Nanday Conures- Fred,Gracie
1 yellow ring neck female-Sunday
1 Mustache Parakeet female- Juliette
As you know I have 2 Nenday Conures. I was told when i recieved them that one is a male and one is a female. I know they are over a year in age. I got them from a breeder, who said they weren't a "proven" pair but that one is male and one is female.. How do i know when they are ready to mate? I just built a nesting box and attached it to the cage... they have gone in and tore up some of the box.. -_- lol

Also...
The 3 female birds i have, have a stainless steal band on their foot, is that normal for the "females" to be tagged and not males? the lady didn't give me any paper with proof of sex... but the male is protective over the female.... anyhow please any insight.

How will you know when they are ready to mate? Well, a while after they are ready you will see little birdies coming out...

I suspect you want to know how to encourage them to mate as if they were ready on their own it would have already happened. Other than wine and candles, both of which could be very bad for birds I'm clueless. I can't even figure out how to get the females of my own species to mate! :)

As far as the banding I have never heard of it being sex specific. Open bands are put on imported/wild caught birds while closed bands are put on birds bred in the US. The breeder you got them from may have used a band to identify sex, but it is not a universal, and as far as I know not even a common practice.

They lady I got the birds from was a bird breeder.. but she said she got them from another breeder who was a friend of hers who wasn't aloud to breed birds where she lived in NC... so i dont know what the hell the bands are... should i just get them redone? I'm not sure. LOL @ the wine and candles.... I like wine and candles*wink* your funny.. i go through and read your posts... your one of a kind. LOL . well, They have gone into the nesting box and chipped some wood off the box and then have came out of the box and just groomed eachother on the pearch. They are SOOO loving to eachother... and they are very friendly with me... when my hand isn't in the cage... LOL! None of the birds i have are tame.. but all of them let me pet them through the cage except my ringneck female.. her new name is Sunday Spaz! lol... anyhow... I think i'll just wait to see what happens now that they have a nesting box.... lol.

Re: Nanday Conure Pair.... Mates?

Okay so I was wondering.... What would be a good age to pull the babies out after they hatch..... Where should I put them? Should I do a 10 gallon tank... how do I keep it warm? Heating pad? Would it make it too hot? Please all experienced people who have had babied birds from hatch date till weaned... please tell me your experience and how you would go about doing this. This is Fred and Gracie's first babies!!! Do I take the male out after they hatch? what about the female? I want to have everything ready before they hatch... if they hatch... you know? I added a picture to my albums... I heard cherping and didn't know where it was coming from so I took the cage door that I removed to attach the nest so they can get in and out... and i blocked them so they wouldn't bite me... :54:
and I added a little more bedding (cobb bedding or somthing absorbs poopie and pee) anyhow... i added bedding and cked the eggs.. they are ALL fertil... all 4... i put them up to the flash light.. and well there is something in there... lol... =) I wont be messing with the eggs any more.. i just moved them to add bedding... they are sitting on the eggs now as i type... they both spend most of the day in the nesting box.... but umm... i really need to find out which is the male and which is the female... i thought all the females the lady gave me had the band on the foot.. but im not sure.. i have to contact her.. b/c doesn't the mother sit on the eggs? or does both the father and mother? anyone here ever had a nanday pair who's had babies?? Advice much appreciated!!!!!

I haven't bred parrots nor do I know much about nandays, but it is common among birds for both parents to sit on the eggs.

You could probably find a book at the library on parrot breeding - you do have a couple weeks yet before they should be hatching.
