Needing to rehome our Blue & Gold and African Grey..How?!

Due to unforseen circumstances, my parents are having to rehome their 3 year old B&G macaw and 4 year old African Grey. Mum was planning on sending them back to their breeder for him to rehome, but i would much rather know where they were going.

How do you go about finding new homes? (They dont have to stay together). I was saying 'free to good home', but mum said that will attract the wrong sort of people. We just want them to go to people who know what they're doing and are offering a home for life. They're both hand-reared - we actually finished rearing the macaw ourselves. We're all devastated, but really have no choice. We've never done anything like this before - our animals always stay with us

What do you mean by saying if you advertise them for FREE that you will get the "Wrong sort of people"??? Why is it that everyone thinks that they have to charge for a pet for them to find them a good home. I remember a time when rehomed pets were FREE, the only time you paid for a pet was if you wanted an exotic pet from a breeder or pet store.

If your truely interested in finding your family members a good home, try posting them for free, with the stipulation that the prospective new owners will have to complete an application form that you can get from any rescue center. They will also have to pass a thorough interview and back ground check. Ask them to list a few people like neighbors who can vouch for their character. You can also ask if they own current pets and what vet they are using and intend to use for your pets.

Lastly, go and do a home inspection, see where they intend to keep your pet and is it adequate for your pets. If folks are living in a falling down house and looks like they are living from hand to mouth then they can't afford to care for your pets.

Now, will all of this create a lot of work YES. But is it the least that you can do to insure your pets go to the best home possible YES.

But you can't really expect folks who are asked to plunk down a wad of money to jump through a bunch of hoops to adopt your pets. So you have to decide is it the money or the welfare of my pets that I'm most interested in.

Was there really any need for that?! How patronising!! You have no idea of the circumstances, so dont be so quick to judge!

I have heard MANY horror stories of people giving animals (mostly horses) away for free, truely believing that the animal is going to a home-for-life. The animal is then sold on, usually with a pack of lies to go with it. It's very difficult to judge people - some are very good actors. We want what is best for the birds, which is why i asked for recommendations - i dont just want to stick some random ads up and see who comes forward.

We are NOT after money - we are actually looking at more of a sanctuary-type place for them.
