Hi kaj and welcome to the forum.

So sorry to hear about your mother, sending you warm well wishes.

I dont personally know much about macaws but i can offer you a little bit of advice on bringing bella home to get you started till more knowelageble members arrive.

before you bring her home, research reserch research. you can never learn to much. scroll through the macaw section of the forum, im sure you will find alot of useful information in there along with some great insight as to whats to come.

when you get bella home, just be patient and work at her pace. She might be all cuddly and affectionate with you at your mothers house, but once she is your home things may very well be different. Sit with her quietly talking, singing reading to her etc. offer her her favourite treats through the cage. just take things slowly, once she is comfortable with you and her new surroundings she will let you know, they are very intelligent. What ever you do, dont go grabbing at her as soon as she comes home.

Good luck with everything you are going through at the moment. When the unfortunate time comes and you take bella into your care, there are many caring members here willing to answer any questions you have so ask away, there are no silly questions

I agree with all Gemini's said...and...will add that you need to read up on touch training & clicker training, because there is a very good chance that, as Gemini mentioned, with a new flock (you, your family & any resident animals), in a new environment, once the bird feel comfortable & has acclimated to its new surroundings, you will be glad you studied & began its and your training.....

Welcome to the forums & to your new responsibility & life experience.....

I don't know how you are about traveling at night, but I've logged more than a few miles with birds & always try to start of at night, with birds you don't know...the darkness gives you a bit of advantage, because their natural instinct against flying at night helps in keeping them calm, then when daylight comes, they have pretty much settled into all the new sounds, vibrations, etc. and probably won't give you any trouble.....don't cover her, let her see what's going on around her.....

Welcome to the forum, kaj. I am very sorry to hear your mother isn't well. :( Best wishes to her, you and your whole family.

THANK YOU for taking in her Bella. Do as much reading and researching as you can. THIS is a great place for questions, and there is a ton of information on the forum. :)

Once you have Bella home, I'd let her settle in for a while, as everything will be new to her. Don't even try to play with her until you feel she is comfortable in her new surroundings. You can then offer her treats, food through the cage bars, and talk, talk and talk some more to her. Quietly sit by her cage and talk.

I wish you, your mom and Bella the best of luck. We'll be here for you if you need guidance or assistance. :)

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your mom's situation. Does your mom have a cage that will fit in your vehicle ? Can she get Bella used to being in it? I too have traveled with my parrots, many long trips. Having a cage that feels like home will help.

Thank You for all the info. she is trained with the Clicker. i will need to be trained on it. Traveling at night sounds like a good idea. She has Numerous Kennels for transport. My mom said she likes to travel on her perch. but i am currently modifying a Very Large Dog kennel that i used for my Mastiff... and decided to remove the back seat out of my Mega Cab Truck i will keep reading my books and asking questions Thank You all.

Because i laugh like my mom. she says it wont be to bad plus i will spend a week with her and with my mom. so she can show me how to put her in shower. or how to set up her bike . and i have to go to meet her vet so i can ask all the correct questions when i start looking for one in Houston Texas. if she dont have a recommendation .i need to find out the parrot virus's in Texas etc. its a lot more work than bringing home my son when he was born.

Thanks so much for the update. :)

Please, if you can, post some pics when you get your baby home.

Safe travels!! AND best wishes to your mom!
