Hello all I am new to the forum and am in need of help with some behavior problems with my severe macaw. Oh and by the way my name is Justin.
To help everyone help me I will give a complete breakdown of my history with this incredibly crazy nut case bird I call my friend.
So after months of research I had decided I wanted a Macaw. I work with lots of reptiles and with everything being cold blooded I thought it would be nice to add some life and voice to my daily life. I wanted to give one of the many macaw I saw for adoption a cool place to ruffled up and play out the rest of their days with some kick butt food.
I looked around and came across a lady who took in a Sever that got neglected and locked up all day. I met with her at her rescue facility and met with my new friend for the first time. She took to me right away which is surprising considering what I had read about Severe's and their tendency to offer a friendly bite and nip here and their. After visiting my friend over the next few weeks I started noticing she may have been bonding with me, which I became sold on her and she had a permanent home now. In all this time she never once bit me freaked out or showed any aggressiveness .
Now here is where I need help. When I got her home I started spending lots of time with her around 12 hours a day and this has not shortened in the 4 months I have had her to date until recently. She would sleep on my chest and almost make a purring sound, most times she will Chase my hand where ever it goes just to get scratched. I had even gained her trust to where I could flip her on her back and tickle her. She puts off this sinister little laugh and giggle you have to hear it to believe me.
I taught her to give kisses for her favorite fruit mango, and pine nuts. She was overall an angel with only a few mishaps which honestly is my fault not knowing all her behaviors yet. She taught me that she bites and bites hard if you ask her to step up with a treat in your hand and don't deliver it as soon as she does her part which is stepping up. Now I don't mean to make her sound great but severe hardly and I learned to love.her quite a bit.
Now about a week ago to date I move her in front of the sliding glass door as usual and put her on top to play. Went out and did my usual yard maintenance. As I made my way around to the back yard she gets excited dances in the window and talks up a storm. Lots just gibberish but hey.
Now its already hot here in Florida as matter of fact 93 today. Realizing I was sweating to death I went about my summer usual and just before getting in the shower I shaved my head. Upon getting out of the shower I walked by her cage in the living room and she screamed at me and tried to not lunge but fly crash trying to bite me. As I went to pick her up she stepped up and tore a chunk from my thumb area. I put her in her cage and talked nice to her but she was not having it. Now my brother lives with me and she never treated him any diff. Than me till now she seems to like him and literally wants me to die by beak. If I touched her water or food she tries biting my fingers. If I go near her she puts off a hideous sound almost like stray cats fighting at night. However I can still manage to lay on the couch and she relaxes and let's me scratch her. She bites everytime I pick her up now. I have managed to flip her on her back still also. Now I don't want those few positives to put off any advice, she hates me. I almost have no right thumb left. She really seems to hate me so here is where my questions arise.
1. Is it possible my haircut is reason for behavior change? I didn't have long hair at all but did shave with a zero guard.
2. Could it be diet? She eats fresh fruit daily Harrison pellets and fruit and nuts along with hemp seeds, star arise and a bunch of other great stuff I wish I ate. fruits are mango papa banana blueberries kiwi loquats jabotcaba(Brazilian grape) peppers carrots squash zucchini the best really. reason I ask is because I was told sugar levels can mess with hormones.
3. Could it be hormones?
She has a huge cage big enough for a large macaw. plenty of toys which she doesn't care for other than a swinging rope she swings on. I keep aspen below and spot clean any fetal matter daily. she gets time in the sun everyday I mob her cage outdoors and she loves it.
I am home with her everyday if it isn't my hair should ah not realistically pick me as her favorite? I never abuse her she really had the life but for last 4 days she gets no out time and I give her little attention when she is negative.towards me other than a treat and a sweet voice.
any help is so greatly appreciated. sorry for the crazy long post I just wanted to give.all details and history. thanks in advance big time. I will not get rid of her no matter what but wish to let her be free again and not be in fear of my face or thumb suffering because. please if your a macaw pro I need your help...
