Sonnie is one of my 2 sun conures and last week he got his foot stuck on a happy hut in his cage and chewed his foot off to get lose. I took him to the vet as soon as I found him. They wrapped it and put him on antibiotics and asked to see him once a week to look at it and re-wrap it. Well he keeps chewing the wrap off and everytime I take him to the vet to wrap it it cost me $42 and I do not have the money to be taking him everyday for them to wrap it again and he wont wear a bird cone. I have vet wrap, gauze, and paper tape. Same things the vet has been using to wrap his leg and been doing it myself. Only thing I dont have is the ointment they have been putting on his foot before they wrap it. What can I use on him that is safe and will work when I wrap his leg at home? I have called 2 local pet stores and both have tried to sell me a spray. The sparys are for a dry bath but double as a cleaner for wounds? If anyone could help me on what to buy I would be very thankful! :)

I did a quick search online and some have said to use triple antibiotic oointment (the brand is triple).
Not sure how accurate this is or safe, but I hope this helps a little. Good luck and i hope he heals soon.

I have that and have used it on my ducks becuase it is safe on them. I was not sure about conures and parrot type birds. I dont want to hurt my little guy or stress him out anymore than he already is.

Thank you! I guess it is safe then. Glad I have some in the duck first aid kit lol.

Hi try a pet med website, Sorry to hear about his foot but one good thing is birds do adjust to the injury pretty well. I live in NYC and i see pigons all the time with one foot.

Years ago my bird had to have her foot amputated and I used Neosporin Creme on the wound and kept it bandaged up and she healed up great and learned to use just one foot while still managing to fly in the aviary. Just make sure you change it out on a daily basis.

Neosporin I have used on my ducks as well. As long as it is the one without pain releaver in it. It is the same as using triple antibiotic so I just used that on him last night. The vet told me it only needs changed once a week or when he chews it off during the week. The foot looks rough though so I am going to do it every night on my own after cleaning it really well.

Why were you using it on the ducks? All three geese I had years ago had an issue during development where their ankles swells and they can't standup. So we kept them in the house and put some sort of sap on the bandage and wrap their legs with it and they all healed in about a month. One was pretty short and she went down to the creek once but didn't know how to get out, we had to pick her up out of the creek as the sides of the creek was pretty high. She called for us to get her, they get put up every night because of coyotes around the area....

I had one duck with bumblefoot. I would put that on there then wrap it and another duck decided to go crazy and pull out some blood feathers one time so I but that on him to make sure it healed. My ducks get locked up at night right now and I have a pen I built for them so they are safe. I have 2 sitting on nests right now if you would like some duckling lol.
