Hello, those who don't know me yet here on PF, I'm Kevin Gilmore. My wife and I just rescued our first parrot, a Eleanora that we named Shelby. I'm also a car nut and professional auto body man and mechanic. My latest car I built is a replica to the 1966 Ford 427 Shelby Cobra, hence the reason for naming our bird Shelby. lol We also raced winged dirt sprint car for many years, but retired a couple of years ago.
Two years ago, my niece is the first person in the state of Nebraska, to be killed when she was texting while driving !
We can't have children and Alley was like a daughter to me and we were very close. She graduated a year early to attend college and was in her first quarter. She was also working 2 jobs and volunteered to the local zoo and a children's water fun park. She was studying to become a veterinary.
Her and her friends do not believe in drugs and alcohol and drugs. She was meeting them at a ballroom dance hall for a teen dance. It was around 10:00 pm, she got lost and turned off the highway to a gravel road, went a mile, turned around heading back the same way to the highway. She was texting her boyfriend for directions. She blew the stop sign at apx. 40 mph and was hit by a car driven by two teen girls, going apx. 60 mph and hit Alley in her door. Alley's car landed 186 feet from the intersection in a corn field. The other girls were ok, but Alley died instantly. (Thank God) Her boyfriend found her first, but was able to call 911. He's still in therapy.
I HAD,....to do something to get people to stop this very deadly action, so I started a non-profit organization called, "Racers Against Texting While Driving". Non-profit organization I.D #27-3701662
I have a friend that became my Vice President, but need more people to come on-board with us. We needed something to become our "tool" for getting the word out about texting/calling while driving, like cancer victim's pink ribbon and walk-a-thons, so we're building a unique, 2-seat & street legal sprint car. It's 85% true to our racing sprint car. We have most of the parts to build the car that were donated from sprint car manufactures, we just don't have any money !
Neither of us have any experience with charities or fund raising, so we need help !
We'll be campaigning at race tracks, schools, car shows etc, and we can be hired out at family get togethers and company's for rides in the car. They haver to listen to our cause speech and sign a "will not text while driving" pledge. I have spent many,....many hours on the phone getting all the parts to build the car, but we need help with calling ANY,....companys for donations to support our much needed cause !
We realize that times are tough and people are holding onto their money, but when we sat up a booth at our local racing track, their Christmas party and awards show, we only received $35 at the party and $16 at the show. We were actually very hurt. At the show, we went to every table and spoke for apx. 3 minutes and told everyone if they wanted more information, please stop bu out table by the bar. I think one man donated most of the $16 by dropping in a few dollars every time he bought a new beer. We did not understand why, because most people thanked us for starting this organization and we received several hugs !
Last June we had a garage sale and was donated hamburgers, hot dogs and pop from our small towns grocery store, Walmart and a beef distributer. We made just over $500.
We don't even have the funds to get our tax-exempt 501c3.
We need to get more parts and start building the car. Once finished we'll need money for gas, tires, maintenance, repair and all other needs for campaigning.

We all need to do what we can, to help stop people from texting while driving. The U.S Safety Council estimates that by 2015, injuries and deaths from cell/texting while driving will take over the number one cause of casualties, from drinking and driving. That's astonishing,.....as we've been driving for over 100 years !
