Hi,

I've adopted a little 3 month old Caique parrot today. The person I've got it from said that it was 3 month old and can not eat seeds yet and he was saying that he's been hand feeding it 20cc, 2 times a day but I'm not sure if it is true or correct way to go about it?

I don't have any previous experience with parrots I just had to adopt it. Because of it I really need a map of things to do and not do. Sadly the first mistake I did was feeding it the food by wetting it with tap water. I've tried to feed it 5cc, it was 30c but from what I've learned later it shouldn't have been below 39c. It's the first day of the parrot at the house and I really need help about what I should be doing and watching out for. It can't even walk properly yet, I think it might be even younger than 3 months old.

I've also made an imgur album with some pictures of the parrot, if it would help give an idea about it.

Also added a pic of it's poop which I thought looked a bit off, is it fine or something is off:confused:

Also, time to get your baby into your Avian Professional to have a good look at the foot!

Your feeding schedule is nowhere near correct, see the Thread provided and a discussion with your Avian Professional.

Yup, outdoors is not a great idea at this point. Also, you really need to check what raptors you have in your area!

Also I think something is wrong with his right foot. Iy shouldn't
turn under like thst. Also as i see it on the cafe bars some looks wrong, possible infection? send a picture of the bottom of the foot?
Poop looks ok

Dang it thus thread got missed and is a couple of weeks old. I hope the baby is alive and that the poster comes back and updates us...

Anybody else who needs help and posts, and nobody replies keep posting, sometimes we miss it and it gets barried

Oh gosh... two things that are crazy hard for a first bird: unweaned, and a caique. I agree that I hope you can give us an update. That foot definitely needs to be looked at.

Also, if he said the bird cannot eat seeds yet - he does not sound educated. The bird should not be weaned onto seeds, that will only make your life harder in the long run.

Hello Guys,

I am sorry for my late answer. I got so much help from @Irishj9 about my Caique.

Here are some updates,

I bought a new cage for Peanut. After I talked with John he said Caiques like climbing and so much playing. Therefore, I decided to buy a new cage.

We occasionally had various problems, and thanks to John I was able to overcome most situations without panic.

For those who want to read this topic and share their views, I will share some of the situations we have experienced below.

1. A few days ago there was a small red streak spot under the beak of the Peanut. Then this stain was scattered under its beak and shaped like a collection of blood. I have consulted a few veterinarians, not sure what exactly happened. It is very difficult to find veterinarians who take care of birds in my location. What the vets say maybe an allergic cause or there is a possibility of hitting somewhere. As far as I can see, this stain has started to decrease gradually now.

2. The problem of breaking the pellet and hard feeds. For now, to solve this problem, I crush the pellet to feed myself and put it in its container. I can't be sure if he can eat it exactly but I'm trying to follow it.

3. I created a general entertainment area by buying various toys in his cage. Also, I thought it would be good for Peanut nails by buying 1 sandy perch. Of course on John's advice.

4. The veterinarian suggested that I drop the vitamin Aminosol 2 drops a day into the water. For now, I have been dropping 2 drops in its water, but again I'm not sure if it is the correct behavior. As I said, the veterinarians in my place don't know much about the birds.

5. According to the information I got from the person I adopted when I opened this subject, Peanut was only 55-60 days old.

6. He spends more time outside with us than in his cafe. He makes him love so much and I think he likes it a lot :)

7. For now, according to the season in the place where I am fruit/vegetable; Broccoli, Green Pepper, Red Pepper, Green Bean, Arugula, Spinach, Peach, Tangerine, Pineapple, Purple Plum, Nectarine, Pear, Carrot, Grape, Apple. I give these daily in small portions. He likes it quite :)

8. As dried nuts; We try to give Fresh Hazelnut, Cashew, Peanut, Fresh Walnut, Carob, Popcorn. I try to keep the portions small.

After 11 days,

1. I always left the door of his cage open because he could not fly fully yet. While working one day, he suddenly flew out of his cage, hit the glass, and fell to the ground. I did not know what to do with the current panic and I picked it up and placed it on a soft floor. After the first hit, it was shaking continuously for 5 minutes and couldn't stand. After about 10 minutes he recovered, ate his ate pellets, and drank water. I immediately got information about this situation by sending a message to my Vet and John. As far as I understand, there is not much that can be done in such accidents. They were told to follow up for 24 hours. Thank God nothing bad happened to him after 24 hours.

2. I still continue to give him hand food. Now he has started to break the pellets, but he continues to ask for hand food. According to John, he will not want the hand food after a while.

3. I bought him lots of new toys, perches, pellets, and even bath sprays. He is very happy with his toys :)

4. I try to give him small portions of fruit/vegetables during the day. Sometimes he eats but sometimes he just plays with them.

5. His nails were really sinking and scratching. My hands and feet were extremely scratched and scarred. Thanks to John's suggestion, I got a sandy perch and after about 1-week his nails were in a pretty good condition.

That's all for now :rainbow1:

Baby Raptor, sound asleep ! SO cute!

I personally dont like peanuts, they can harbor fungus in and out the shells. Also, with food bowl placement, you do not want perches or or other standing places over the the food bowls, or they become soiled from poops. Same with water bowls. Best too is to have 3 bowls, 1 water, 1 dry food like pellets and seeds and 1 for fruit and veggies (because they spoil quickly and you dont want to contaminate the dry foods).

For starter toys, I recommend size appropriate ones. These look a little big for a young small parrot. Try for 1 wooden , 1 rope, 1 paper and 1 plastic (like chains), and see which ones he plays with. That way you don't waste $$ on toys he will not play with.

He is so darn cute - love me some caiques!

^^ I agree with the above user - expect the plastic! The goal of toys is for the bird to destroy them, so the faster its gone, the more you know the bird liked it :) plastic toys aren't easy to destroy and they shouldn't be ingested, so always stick to wood, paper, and other natural fibers!

You can also train your bird to play with toys - some just don't totally understand how to fully enjoy them. Give them the toy and when they touch it click a clicker (or just say "good!") and give a treat. Then wait until they chew the toy or take a chunk out of it, then click or say good. That way you can teach them how fun it is to destroy the toys!!

Yeah , shoulda added that caveat - if your parrot chews plastic up, make sure he is not ingesting the little pieces. Some do some dont. My amazon fights with lengths of polypropelene chain, but never chews on it.
