Recently we bought a cockatiel, he was sick when we bought him but we took actions early and took him to the vet. Vet gave us medicine and we gave him once a day for one week. Then we went to the vet and he said everything will be alright but he needs couple days to get himself together, he had some kind of intestine infection. He was doing really well the first couple days, was active and chirped a lot. But now he is sneezing in the mornings, yes only in the mornings and he doesn't have any nasal discharge and also he's sleeping on a stick in his cage, the stick is located almost on the top of the cage, but early in the mornings he goes to the bottom of the cage and sleeps for like an hour there every morning. Also when I whistle he closes one eye and shakes his head. Today I was vacuuming my room and he closed one eye but didn't shake his head. He's never done that. Is something wrong? :06:

Who did you buy this bird from? This bird should not have been offered for sale if it was sick and needed medical attention. But good for you for getting it to the vet right away for treatment. Hopefully what the vet prescribed will work, though its the Certified Avian Vets that are the experts when it comes to birds and illness.

Cockatiels have a range of different behaviors, including the ones you mentioned. My two will sleep on the top perch until morning when I uncover them and they will be hanging out on a lower perch and stretching for a while. Birds will rest with one eye open, one leg up, beak grinding as a sign of being calm and content. The sneezing it a bit worrying, I would check with your vet on this and maybe schedule another visit, your tiel may not be out of the clear yet.

step 1. Report the breeder, they've broken the law in selling a knowingly sick pet

Was the vet a certified avian vet? giving some medicine and saying "he needs to get himself together" without the medicine having a notable improvement is dangerously relaxed. Your bird sounds like they're on Death's door. sleeping on the floor of the cage is a sign they can barely perch. When he closed his eye earlier was he upright on a perch or was he lying down? If he was lying down then he was slipping out of consciousness

I don't know if the vet was certified because I live in a small country and we really don't have avian vets but seemed like he knows a lot about birds. He was upright on a perch when he had closed his eye.

It was a "qualified" animal shop, but they had bad reviews because of the sick birds which I only saw after I bought my tiel. I will probably take him to the vet because the sneezing is worrying me too. Thanks for the reply!

Be watchful but a sneeze is sometimes a sneeze. Sometimes clark will sneeze on me....always on me for some reason.

The sitting at the top of the cage and the bottom of the cage is kind of normal. I wouldn't consider that anything health related, mine doesn't do it but I've read some birds even sleep on their backs in the bottoms of cages. It's maybe just his morning routine.

Also my bird is not afraid of vacuum noise, a consistent noise he's ok with, it's the out of the normal pop, or bang, or a creak of the house settling that makes him perk up.

I'd say go ahead and do the sneezing checkup, it certainly won't hurt, but relax a little, enjoy your new bird and have fun with him. Work on providing a good diet and exercise and bonding.

BB will sneeze on me on occasion

it doesn't matter if they're qualified. Under EU law it's illegal to sell a knowingly sick animal. Report them so they don't keep pumping out ill birds forcing people to spend money on the care the shop should be paying for
