Kiwi's is loving his new stainless perch! Perhaps a little too much...Unfortunately, the way it is designed, the round stand I had his old t-perch on does not work well with it and it's apparently a whole lot more unstable than I thought. He likes climbing forth between his big play gym and little stand, and earlier I heard the most frightening crashing-banging noise with a screech or pure terror. He had tipped the perch over and fell. He wasn't injured, but I think we were both scared half to death:eek: Poor Kiwi was so frightened he had an accident on the floor and came RUNNING to me for some reassuranc:( I need for him to have something he can't tip from now on.

I was looking a this stand from petsmart, but am not sure how stable it would be:
Prevue Pet Products Tubular Hanging Bird Cage Stand | Stands | PetSmart
That or make a PVC structure to hang the perch from.

Any opinions? We are renters, so no hanging from the ceiling. I've moved it out of reach until I can buy or build a stand to hang it from safely!

This is the perch, and as you can see, it's really meant to hang off something or sit on a large flat surface like a table or the floor (which I don't have the room for between his cage and play gym):

(He can swing on it and it's very secure hanging up on the laundry bar above the sink, which is why I think it's more designed to hang rather than sit)

I have 2 of those stands, and they are not really stable at all. They rock pretty easily, unfortunately. I am pretty sure he would tip it over.
However, if you could figure out a way to stablize it at the bottom, it may work. My hubby said that maybe just putting some weight on the bottom would work as well.

Since it was in stock and petsmart has a 60 day return policy, I went ahead and just bought one. I just got it assembled. It actually seems reasonably stable. I shook it (with the perch on it) around pretty violently. It does rock a bit, but I'm not thinking he can actually tip it over or get the perch to slide off the hook. This appears to be a rather large one, and is rated to hold up to 40lbs! The perch only weighs a couple pounds. I have my steamer heating up so I can sanitize it and closely observe if it's going to work or not (so I can catch it before it tips if it starts tipping):)

Could you make some sand bags to place over the feet of the stand to weight it down a bit?

Or maybe you could cement the stand, without the feet, into a container or pot. This should make it heavy enough that your bodybuilder.....er I mean Kiwi wouldn't be able to accidently tip it over. :D

EDIT: maybe you could do the sand bags and then make a cover for them that matches with the tray liners or kiwi's backpack. Kind of like the sports wheat packs you get in Australia. I have one at home that I could take a photo of tonight and add to here. I tend to like to keep most things matchy-matchy. :D

Glad to hear he wasn't injured or hurt.
Gizmo came with that stand and it was pretty stable for the rounded cage he came in too. It was on carpet so that might have helped stabilizes it? It was also outside for almost 2 months, it didn't move an inch from the wind, don't know about the rocking though.

The sand bags that Bundiibird sounds like a really good idea. I'm not sure how much sand/rock bags cost but they sound relatively cheap. If you decide to go that route, put a pillow case over it! They tear pretty easily from the weight.

I like those stands (I've wanted one in black forever) but I've only once seen it retail and I should have gotten it then. I'll have to order one too. :)

It fits so perfectly between his cage and play stand, I won't need to anchor it! One leg touches the wall and the other touches the side of the play stand base (which are those plastic drawers, filled with toys so very stable). There is no way he's going to be able to tip it over:D He doesn't really get "wild" on it, he was just trying to grab the edge so he could climb over and ended up pulling it off the old stand (which was like a wood plant stand).

Julie- Check Petsmarts website. They have this feature where you can check and see if it's in stock in your area and at which location. They stock it in almost all the stores here, so they may where you live too! The guy who worked there did have trouble finding it in the store though. They had them stuck behind the small bird cages you would hang on the stands instead of having the stands in their own spot on the shelf.

Thanks April, I'll check that out! I've never seen them assembled in the store, but like you said they could be hiding since it's not a popular item. Plus if they're unassembled in a box (you said you had to assemble it) it would be even harder to find. Good to know I can do a search on the website. I want it for Robin so I could hang the jolly ball and see if he likes it.
