Need a little advice

Hi everybody,

So I'll just cut to the chase so this doesn't become long.

My dog has been very sick and my family and I took her to the vet last night for a checkup, and her condition has worsened. The vet is unsure as to the exact time, but it could be a week or it could be a month. Now, issue is, I'm the only one who's confident letting my birds out, so I can't ask my family to do it for me even on occasion. Really right now I just want to spend as much time with my dog as I can though.

Any ideas on how I can juggle this? I can't have them out while I've got my dog near me because she's afraid of them, and I can't leave them unattended. My goal is usually to have my birds out for at least four hours a day, and if not at least be in the same room while they're in their cages.

I think for now the best thing is to spend time with your dog in the room with the cage closed if your dog is okay with that.

It may be an unpopular opinion but for the moment with your dog at this point they come first and your birds may just have to make do with being on the second rung of the ladder whilst you're there for your dog

Thank you. I feel really guilty about leaving them in but also I've had my dog for a very long time, and truly she does come first.

I can't leave the birds out without supervision, otherwise I would. My budgie is a notorious chewer.

as much as birds come first normally right now your dog needs you more than your birds. they'll get over it in due course and you can still give them some time right now

It sounds like the best decision would be to keep your birds caged and spend the time you need with your dog. If the cage is big enough they will understand and adapt. It's not forever, and they will be safer inside their cage. As family life ebbs and flows changes do happen and sometimes we must shift priorities for a little while.

I honestly can't really focus on them at all right now, so its going to have to be that way. The reality is starting to sink in and I don't want to leave her side.

I'll post a picture of their cages below... I hate to leave them in but I'm pretty sure they're plenty large enough. (Budgie and cockatiel have the same exact cage model)

Yes the cage looks plenty big to accommodate some extra in-cage time!! They will be fine as you spend more time with your pup.
