Name that species (with pictures)

I'm hoping some of you who are more experienced identifying amazon species can help me out. The bird in the pictures was identified variously as a yellow nape, a yellow crown & a Panama amazon. He has gone through a lot of homes in a very short period of time (you'll see where he has started plucking his chest & we've started an aloe spray). We've identified his breeder, but they bred a lot of species & aren't helpful with legband information.

Anyone who can positively identify the species (or tell me what other picture angles you would need to rule in a species or rule one out?

[He is not in rescue, he is in my living room - he is our 1st amazon, although not our 1st parrot, so we're looking for information.]

Doesn't look like any of my Panamas,(white feet,hornbeak, some have black on beak) i vote Yellow Crown/Yellow Front. Can you ID the breeder from the band? what's on the Band? Local Bird? What area?

Yes he is a Yellow Crowned Amazon. I provided a foster home for one once.
Yellow Napes have yellow on the back of the neck but they get it slowly after they are one years of age or so.

More information -

He is a craigslist bird, most recently residing in the MidAtlantic area. The former owner didn't give the aura of knowing birds well in general, or this bird in particular. And had only had him a month, so I pass along the information that came with him, but don't vouch for its accuracy.

His band is FX so I think his breeder is Florida Exotics. There are 4 digits after the FX & the last two are 01. Per the seller, the vet thought he was 4 to 6, but the 01 on the band might indicate 10. He was posted on craigslist as a Yellow Nape.

His actual species is more a matter of curiosity than anything. I remembered reading that not all yellow napes have, well, yellow napes. Even so, I thought he was a Yellow Crown & sent his picture to a woman who runs a local rescue. She suggested the possibility of a Panama Amazon.

Thanks to mtdoramike for posting the Panama Amazon picture. I have to say the bird on right in that Panama Amazon picture looks a lot like this bird, foot color & all. Except this bird's beak has more dark on it. I tried to post two more close-up pictures of the beak & feet. They aren't very good - fairly dark room, moving bird, quick pics . . .

Yeah Not a Panama,anyway i know Bill at Fla Xotics PM me the band# and i'll see what his records show, if you want.I have 15yr old napes that are just getting a few yellow feathers last year and a 40yr old hen who looks like a DYH. It all depends what region the parents came from and still lots of variables in the amount of yellow. PS ican PM you Fl xotics phone number if you want to call,sometimes takes aday or two but he will return your call.

Oh, heaven forbid he be such a lesser species . . .

(Joking) I know sometimes things in print look much more condescending than they were meant to be . . . and whatever he is, we are happy he lives here.

He's a beautiful bird whatever he is. Looks like a real happy boy. Love the playstand, we need one here like that.

The playstand was a happy accident. We called about this guy on a Sunday, my husband works nights & I work days, so we can generally go look at a bird on a weekend & were figuring the following Friday, at the earliest.

And while we had a line on a couple new-to-us cages, we weren't only looking at amazons, so needed to know the species before finding the cage (bar-spacing, floor dimensions, etc.,). We were thinking, "find the bird . . . pick him up in a couple days, after we bring the cage home."

This guy went from being placed "only to the right home" to "HE MUST BE GONE TOMORROW!!!" faster than you can imagine.

And he came with a cage, but it turned out to be a cockatiel cage . . . We only put that tinny little cage in the car because we were told he'd been living in it for at least a month (and with that many changes in his life in that short of a time, we figured the LEAST we could do was let him have a cage he recognized for the first few days of the transition.).

SO, we looked locally for a cage (they ALL were cockatiel cages!) & searched craigslist for a good, used parrot cage & found one an hour or more away. When we got there, it wasn't the right cage, either, but their other, unadvertised one was pretty neat (but needed to be re-powder-coated, so it is off being "freshened" while he sits in the stupid cockatiel cage).

Anyhow, the cage sellers then said, "And we need to sell this parrot playgym that was a display area for a bird store that closed a few years ago . . .

Well, I was happy I'd packed more cash than I thought I'd need because an extra $100 bought that table . . .

To tell you the truth, I'm still kinda excited about it - it REALLY is a great place for the birds to play.

Yepper 100% sure he's yellow crown. Look at my Sammy!!
Black beak with a reddish orange colored portion on the upper part of the upper beak.
Panamas have horn colored beaks as well feet. Yaya for yellow crowns!

Wow.Playstand was a home run for a 100 bucks .

I know - finding a 36 x 24 x 48 stainless cage for $75 should have been highlight enough on the trip (they were selling it because it didn't collapse & wouldn't fit up the stairs to the birds' rooms).

When they mentioned a playstand outside on the porch they needed to sell (it would not have fit up the stairs, either) I looked at it partially out of curiosity but partially to be polite, not expecting to want whatever they were selling - or to be able to afford it, if I did want it.

Oh, and those PVC "bumpers" around the outside are supposed to keep a clipped parrot from getting off the playtable. Paul-E arrived with a pretty severe wing clip. But those bumpers don't even slow him down when he decides he's bored with the playtable & wants to go on a walkabout . . .

Well no matter what type of ammie he is what matters is that he is in a good home now. I love my Amazons through adn through. I got mine being told they weren't tame, verging on dangerous, i have had them just over a week and they are eating out of my hands and singing songs with me all day. Thier personality is amazing, sometimes i don't want to talk my eyes off them for hours because they are being so silly I'm afraid ill miss some of it. Also since we got them i an say we have maybe had our TV on like an hour in the week because they are better then ANYTHING on TV lol COngrats on your new birdie baby though.

Just another picture of PaulE - his plucked spot is almost gone (although impossible to see from this angle). He is playing on his friend Gilbert's playstand - Gilbert is the Grey on the cage in the background of the picture. (Gilbert arrived with 2 huge cages, the playstand, and a magnifcent assortment of untouched toys because he was afraid of them).

I think if Gilbert watches PaulE long enough, he'll get the gist of playing, although I managed to get PaulE's one sedate moment in this picture.
