Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Jonesy..again...with his relentless stripping. Yoink yoink yoink..off his clothes..sigh...he was BAd when he first came here, then turned into a very handsome little guy..now he is even worse!

His previous parront gave me a bottle of "grannicks bitter apple" spray..made specifically to deter plucking. The ingrediances read "water,Isopropanol 20%,bitter principles and extracts" its made for dogs as a "deterrent to discourage fur biting, hair chewing and hot spots"

I used it on Bonesy before consulting this forum  I figured if its safe for pooches,it should be ok for the fids.

Anyway I gave The Coclkatoo Man a couple squirts, and he started his stripping thing again..Arleen said he immediately ran to his water bowl to wash his beak and feet! lol.
I sprayed a bit on my palm and took a lick and boy oh boy is it bitter! Would make ME stop plucking, thats for sure

So,any comments or experience with this stuff? We'll see how he does about stripping now!

Jim

I may have used similar stuff on a plucking Moluccan ages ago, and it didn't seem to have much effect. Their tastebuds are very different from ours - they can tolerate strong peppers because AFAIK they aren't sensitive to capsaicin.

I tried one with Willow trying to get her to stop eating the trim....no luck. And after accidentally ingesting some.....it IS nasty. Didn't stop her tho.

I think I'd rather completely soak a bird with water than use bitter apple spray....

Only thing is..Jonesy LOVES to be squirted with water

PS...I have not found one piece of his clothing since that ONE application of bitter apple spray. :p

There isn't much available about the effect of birds consuming apple cider vinegar, but it is widely considered safe and nontoxic as a cleaner and even a water additive. I know (mainly from salad stealing endeavors) that Eva hates the taste of vinegar and that might be a safer thing to use on your too. I have used bitter apple spray on dogs but I wouldn't assume something safe for dogs is safe for birds - they are larger and much less sensitive animals and quite different biologically from parrots.

Does Joney pluck when he's wet? Or only when dry?

BTW, Isopropanol alcohol may be better known as rubbing alcohol...
