Not sure how you big bird folk do it, or maybe I'm sensitive. Foofanny is light enough not to cause any issues for me. Ellie however seems to be heavy enough to just cause a ton of little scratches on my shoulder with her little claws. I'm going to have to wear a sweatshirt or something more protective for the next few days until it all heals.

My lower arm has some decent long scratches and my shoulder just looks raw. I think between the heavier weight..not that she is huge, she's just a blue crown and then having one claw which is growing oddly it's causing a lot of tiny scratches. Almost looks like a terrible sunburn that was scratched or something.

I'm hoping my skin toughens up with time. I had a similar issue with a high backboned horse I had that I barebacked all the time...got calloused in places we don't want to discuss but it made the ride better in time. :52:

Depends on how short you like the nails and how you trim them, I've found. When I clip their nails, they still end up with a sharp feeling and can hurt. When I have the vet dremmel them, they're incredibly smooth and never leave a mark, though they do end up having difficulty gripping in the first week because they're accustomed to having some point of grip from their nails.

I would just put some Aloe cream or something that I find good is Savlon Healing Gel

I end up with loads of scratches too from Plum when the ends of his nails are like pins. If you try to wear something a little thicker that will give enough protection for your skin and possibly work on getting Ellie used to having her nails filed (good luck with that!!! LOL) :)

I have to keep a few sandstone perches and concrete perches in BB's cage and playstand. Once in awhile he will get a sharp talon but most of the time he keeps them rounded off. Unless he is feeling insecure and holds on for deal life he does not cause any scratches or pin marks anymore. BUT he is also not a shoulder bird

I recently bought a now favorite sweater-shirt that we jokingly say has "built-in" shoulder patches. Our sun-capped has some decently scratchy nails, we got them trimmed, but the downside is that he doesn't hold on as well.

Ellie has a concrete perch she uses often. I think the culprit is one of her nails was cut all the way to the toe by the previous owner and now it's growing straight down. It's pretty awful. Because, even the owner admits she's never cut her nails without causing it to bleed (she considered it perfectly normal for that to happen cause they should be cut really short), Ellie does not trust someone coming at her nails.

I do Foos and Zeki's myself, but Ellie I think I'll bring in for the trimming.

For now, it's all about hoodies. :)

I have tiels and I get scratched up if I let them on my bare shoulders. I always wear a t shirt when the fids are out.

We use either a file or a dremel on the birds nails to round them out. IMO a pedi perch or concrete perch isn't even close enough. My birds have all of them, but they still need the tips of their nails rounded. You don't have to make them super short, just round the ends.

I would file her's, I'm just concerned with breaking any t rust we are slowly building. She HATES her toes or wings touched. She will do her faker lurch and if that doesn't work she runs and hides her face like an ostrich. I'd rather my vet be the bad guy I think. I think with time I'll be able to do hers, but currently I just don't want to upset her that much.

I might have to give the nail file a go - when the doctor sees the scratches and scars on my wrist I'm always explaining I have parrots, it's not self harm. The birds nails are all clipped regularly.

LOL Yeah, they will want to recommend a little visit to the local psychologist.
