Red-bellied male
Why is my 16 year old Red-bellied suddening starting to regurgitate a few times now over several days? Very little is regurgitated, a few food particles and a little fluid over several minutes. He gets listless during after this and does not act well for some hours. We think his diet is way to rich in seeds and now have him on a strict diet of only 10% seeds and the rest soft foods and pellets. He has always had veggies and fruit, but his main diet was a seed mix based on safflower sees. Now we started him on Harrison's chunky pellets as his basic food plus soft foods he has had before. Loves grapes, banana, apple, frozen veggie mix thawed out, he likes peas and corn especially. Any experience with this and any suggestion why this is happening and how serious it might be? Thank you!

Oh, wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww... this is way above my pay grade. Do you have an avian veterinarian? You (we) need one. So many scary possibilities.
I LOVE that you're reaching out. Please stick with us.

Hello, and welcome to the Parrot Forums family. I wish it could be under better circumstances, however.

With birds, there is a marked difference between regurgitation (which is usually in reference to them bringing up balls of food to feed their babies, mates, or close companions with bobbing motions of their heads) and vomiting (which is an unbidden and uncontrolled bringing up of food usually marked by a side to side motion where the vomit is sprayed about.)

Regurgitation isn't generally something to worry about, unless as a precursor to less than savory hormonal behaviors. Vomiting, on the other hand, is far more worrisome and potentially serious.

But any such drastic change in behavior, and especially given the listlessness that you describe, definitely calls for a visit to a certified avian vet as soon as possible.

the fact he gets listless afterwards makes me think this may not be regurgitation. I'd take him to his vet for a quick once over to see if anything is wrong just to be on the safe side
