African Grey Timneh
Her toe nail went into the hole inthe top of her house and she freaked out and ripped her whole nail off. There wasn't much of any blood I never used any styptic powder. Poor Timneh was shaking in pain for a little bit she is so tough. Going to call our vet in the am and see what he says. I was kind of freaking out she is so tough. Shes pretty much getting back to normal, quiet and tender but using her foot again. will her nail grow back? My poor baby. :02:

Poor Timneh please let us know what the vet says.

Aaawwwwww, poor little bird. Our toe nails grow back if lost, probably within 6 months so maybe Timneh's will also. Id be extra vigilant on cage cleanliness for the moment to avoid infections as you cant just put a plaster on!

You see many times where parrots have lost toes, even multiple toes and the birds just seem to adapt so even in the worst case where the nail doesnt grow back i doubt Timneh wont be effected too much.

Id be giving extra cuddles for the time being.

Poor baby that must hurt badly:( I'd suggest pouring some hydrogen peroxide (not any other disinfectant) over it if it hasn't scabbed over yet, otherwise leave it be. I'd make sure her perches and cage are sanitized and just be extra diligent about sanitation until that heals up a bit. Extra treats wouldn't hurt either:)

My dad's cockatoo bit off my mom's amazons toenail and she returned the favor by biting off the tip of his toe (these birds are normally separated as they fight, both cases were accidental meetings). Missing a toenail/toe tip hasn't affected how either can move around or climb, but the cockatoo has a stub and the amazon did for a long time but after about 20 years a weird little stubby "nail" grew in randomly. Not like a regular nail, but like a little spike on her toe... I wouldn't hold out much hope that'll grow a nail back, but I also wouldn't be too concerned about it affecting her mobility after healing up.

When I was a kid my family was on vacation and sitting outside at a restaurant I saw the fattest pigeon lurking about looking for handouts. It had no feet at all and was walking on stubs and it was huge compared to the other pigeons. Guess people felt bad for it and fed it more than the others. In any case, that bird had certainly adapted to it's disability and learned to exploit it;)

So we are going in to see the doctor at 2:00 today to get some antibiotics for her water and to just make sure it’s all cleaned up. My poor baby at least it’s in the 30’s today and not negative 10. Still get super stressed about getting her into her carry bag toweling her sucks cause she screams and it breaks my heart.

for travel to the vets I take enzo in a cat box, its only for 20mins each way so she doesnt seem to find.

I use one of those generic plastic pet carrier thingies (with the grate/front door) kinda looks like a portable jail cell
Lucky with Amy,I just have him on his perch stick and slide him in. He'll just look out the door and mumble Amazon stuff, unless he hears human voices (other than mine) and he'll let you know "something" is in the carrier lol.

Poor Beeb's hasn't been in one enough. I have to cup him in my hands and place him inside and he'll pace back and forth sometimes yelling for me.

With Smokey I'd have to towel her and listen to her growl like a pack of mad dog's,then wooo and chatter once she was in.
The look on her face while in the towel! Eye's squinted at me..chewing the heck out of it. There was no mistaking the distain she was showing lol.

Timneh made it through her appointment. Got the meds in her water, she’s probably going to take a nice long nap while I go back to work. Hopefully anyway. Only 62 bucks so that part was good. I was having trouble getting her back into her carrier in the office. I forgodon’t to ask the docotor to do it for me so the nurse was helping me. She was flying around the little room and fell and bonked her beak off the table and gave herself a little trim. No blood but jeez my poor baby.

A rough day for Timneh ...and you! :p Happy to hear she'll be ok though.

Sorry to hear about your Grey. Mushka lost a nail before I got her and it has come back in. It hasn't come in as long as the others yet and it's a bit deformed but it is growing so hopefully your birds will too.

Timneh playing with new bell. Recovering in process. I accidentally used like ten dollars worth of antibiotic water up in 24 hours though. I continued to clean her water dish twice a day. So now we do it once a day and we are gonna run out before the two weeks that’s for sure.
