Its taken about 7 months but we have taken our now 20 month (approx) male eccie from complete refusal to be handled (biting, feather ruffling and eye flashing) through a series of steps to the point where he will now calmly step up out of his cage onto hands. He had been content to sit on my arm while we all watched TV but in the last couple of weeks he has been biting particularly hard. No eye flashing or other signs of upset, he just latches on and gnaws at my jumper until he gets a lump of me, give a shake of the arm and he lets go then does it again. He's not doing it to go back to his cage as he immediatly asks to come out when put away. The last few days have been much worse since the arrival of a new 12 week female. Any Ideas?

give him something to chew on when his on your arm, have a selection of toys ready lol his prob a little excited and wants to show off some for the new lady

You also have to understand that even at 20 months old. This is the time of the season when hormones play into a Parrot's behavior. Both of my boys are going through this tough time. My GW Macaw at only 2 years old does not understand what the changes are and is by no means a mature bird but still I can see changes in his behavior. Their hormones during this time of year are playing ping pong with their brains. I agree, give him his favorite toy, Give treats for good behavior and never reward or laugh at bad behavior as you don't want to send mixed mesages.
If he continues to bite, time outs in the cage for no more then 8 min at a time. Your Eclectus will soon learn that you are no push over and this type of behavior is not allowed. Best of luck Joe

Having never owned a bird, I was wondering the other day if spring made particularly the males more, well, aggressive. We have wild turkeys in my neighborhood, and the past few weeks have been getting serenaded with "I'm a powerful male turkey, don't you want me, ladies" most mornings, and even in afternoons. These are fairly wary of humans, but one even tried to intimidate my husband with a giant, all puffed out display, even though my sweetie is a) male b) no competition for the turkey hens c) Not at all turkey shaped - he's 5' 10" and has no feathers or tail whatsoever!

Do older parrots tend to get this way in spring, or do you think, in the original poster's case, the new lady in the house is exacerbating this?

My macaw is turning 10 next month and I've been dealing with his hormones the past 7 years so its not unusual for us....My Cockatoo is a female and I don't think she's half as bad as my Macaw....

Joe,

Its the time I don't play with mine too much....my macaw gets aggressive... but he's out of it for a month now so we're back to the old routine.... :)

try and ignore it, he probly thinks its a great game and i found with our parrot she would deliberately be naughty so she could go to her cage! so we started putting her on her stand instead or even on the floor and don't yell or tell him off because they think its great your talking to them lol ignoring is all i can suggest

Our 6 month old ekkie does something like this. He loves to come off his cage and sit with you, but while his is with you he loves to chew on my arm and fingeres. He is to the point where I don't like getting him down cause it hurts so bad but I suck it up cause I know he is young and needs the attention. He is our first bird so we are learning too.
