I had almost 24 years one parrot - Superb parrot (I got it when he was 1 year old) and one month ago this parrot died because of unexpected injury. He was bleeding from one of his long feathers. The problem was that my parrot didn't liked that anyone touch him so I couldn't help him much in this injury. I called a pet doctor and he said that in my case it would be better not to come with my parrot to him but we still came because wound in my parrot didn't close and it keep bleeding. But unfortunatly after pet doctor healed wound my parrot didn't wake up :(. First days after I lost this parrot were really hard because I got this parrot when I was a kid and I was with this parrot even more time than I was with my parrents. At least he was old when he died. Some articles say that Superb parrots live 15 years, some say 25 years. My was almost 25 years old.

Is this common in parrots that they bleed because of one feather? Why this bleeding happening?
I never had any problems with the health of my parrot. He was always healthy. And then in one day he died...

I'm so sorry to read of your loss. Yes, a parrot can easily bleed to death from a broken blood feather. This is a feather that is still growing so it has an active blood supply. If such a feather breaks, the hollow shaft creates a pipe that lets the blood pour out and the parrot can quickly bleed to death. The only way to stop it is to grab the parrot - wrap him in a towel if need be - and pull the stub of the broken feather out. You might have to use pliers to grip the broken end of the feather. Once that is pulled out, the bleeding will usually stop right away.

I'm so sorry for your loss :( You sound like a very kind hearted owner, and he had a long life with you. Take care over the next few days.

Oh :( ..the problem was that my parrot didn't like that I or anyone else touch him (I could give him kisses or allow him to fly on me...but I can't touch him with hands). It would be almost impossible for me to grab him and pull out the broken feather. I remember how my parrot desperetly jelling at the doctor when he and I grabed him. It was heart broken for me.
Is this bleeding because of the feather a common thing in parrots? Does it happens more often in old parrots?

I believe it happens in all parrots... maybe more in younger ones because they're clumsy and reckless.
Please try to feel better. Your bird was LOVED... the less-lucky birds long for that.
*hugs*

I am so very sorry for the loss of your parrot. Feather injuries are common but severe issues are somewhat rare.

I am sorry for your loss. This is somthing that can happen any time to most any bird.
Sometimes you have to be willing to accept a bad bite for the good of your bird.

My wild caught parrot would not allow handing. One day he got his foot stuck in a toy.
I got bitten badly but freed his foot.

I wish the best for you.

With basic training, any Owner can be taught how to handle the most unruly Parrot. Being able to handle them is needed to provide medications, support the Parrot if injured and needs to be transported and for just basic care of nails and a quick examination.

As stated above, they do not have to like it and can clearly bite, but it is a required ability that any Owner needs to learn.

I am very sorry for your loss! Warm feather hugs!

That is not the way we see our companions go. Unexpectedly. I have read about this happening to a pet parrot but this is the first time I reading about it first hand. I know what must be done should this condition arise; I hope that I react the right way. I am very sorry for your loss, it must have been very hard on you, to have him go like that.

Pet doctor said that this problem with feather was somehow difficult to fix. At first he said that I should try to fix that home but when he saw it he said that it was more difficult to cure. I actully never tought that this bleeding because of the feather could be a problem in parrots. As I said my parrot was healthy the whole life. But it is true that he become old. His feathers were not so rich in colors like in younger ages. Parrot was also not so noisy last years and it was sleeping also a lot more than in younger years (he could sleep 16 hours with no problem last years).

Interesting pet doctor said that my parrot would fix this feather alone. But I didn't trust that because he lost a lot of blood and didn't fix it.

Unfortunatly I can't travel back in time now. I still think my parrot had better life than many parrots in home. Almost all the time in this 24 year my parrot was outside of his cage. He was in cage only when he wanted to eat. All other time he was outside in my appartments..
