Hello everyone,
I am a newbie. I just got a new amazon, not sure what kind he is. However, was not well kept before so trying to make him feel at home and take good cae of him. I am not sure of his age he just makes one continuous "crying" or "begging" sound, except when he has his head rubbed. Eating well and took him to the vet this week who started him on antibiotics for loose stool. His nutrition before was poor and he appears to have alot of stress feathers. He has some blue and yellow feathers coming up above the cere with some red on his shoulders and wings. I was wondering if he was probably a Guatemalan Amazon.
Help needed. Thanks.

Lovely bird, Looks like a Scaly-Naped Amazon but I could be very wrong. :) Good Luck with it all, hope his feather condition improves soon.

Depending on what you mean by crying and begging he is doing, he might be a baby begging to be fed. To me he just needs a good bath and you'll be amazed how much better they'll look after bathing. IF he is indeed a baby, stress feather is a bit early, but I guess it depends on what formula they had him on? IF your able to take a video of that behavior I can help you more in that situation. I am unsure what type of Amazon he is but I bet henpecked would know!

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I have a video but how do i share from photo bucket? BAsed on his sounds I assume he is a baby (a big one to that) I have changed his diet and been giving him misting every other day with vitamins. There is already a difference.

From photobucket, copy the direct link. Then from your reply window where you type in your reply, there's a tiny globe like thing, click on that. Then paste the link within the box that pops up, click ok then click post reply. All people have to do is click on the picture to view the video. Make sure you tell people that in your message cause most don't know your able to click on the picture for video off photobucket.

My bad, it took me a few tries, copy the IMG link instead....lol...

To me, that seem like a baby behavior but I don't know Amazons well enough to tell you really. There's several members that's had theirs since they were babies plus henpecked who raises them, they would be able to help you. Did you build that cage??? Did you use treated lumber or regular wood??? And the wire mesh, did you treat it with vinegar prior to use???

Ok thx. Yes I built the cage myself. It isnt treated and i did not use vinegar. What purpose does the vinegar serve?

Galvanized wire mesh have zinc in it and Vinegar kinda neutralizes them making them safe for bird use. Otherwise they're toxic for birds! Otherwise there's always stainless steel wire mesh available. And you can also get stainless steel frames as well!

Ok thx. I dont think the lumber is treated. I did not use vinegar either. Does the vinegar act as a cleaning agent?

Make sure the lumber isn't treated as treated lumber is poisonous to birds!!! That's if he decides to take a chunk out of it to chew on. It's hard to tell from your video or pictures if it's indeed treated wood or not cause from on top it's got a green shine to it but then look from the sides it don't look it. Is it under some sort of awning or something?? Cause un-treated wood in the rain/moisture will eventually start to mold and rot. That's something you gotta consider as well!

Yes those are very good points. I have quite a few things to correct now. Thanks for the advice.

No problem!!! Hopefully someone else can chime in on your Amazon if it's indeed a youngster. To me it is but I don't know a whole lot about young Amazons.

Welcome to the forum. :)

You've got yourself a BEAUTIFUL Yellow Nape Amazon baby there. :)

The sounds he is making are begging sounds. He may be hungry and wants to be fed. How old is he? Is he eating well on his own?

Mikey has given you outstanding advice on his living quarters. :)

Hey RL ,welcome to the forum. He looks to be a young Mealy, How much does he weigh? There's several subspecies of mealies, Guatamela is one of those, they usually have more blue on their head than the others. he's still a baby ,so hard to say for sure. Where do you live? Is it a local bird? Some of the Napes also look similar when young and can be quite large.

Hi everyone, thanks again for the excellent feedback so far. I am not sure of his weight and I live in Jamaica currently. The bird was bought here locally but was brought in from overseas. Currently I am feeding him alot of fruits and vegetables such as mango, carrot, apples and corn. However, he is a lover of bread. That along with vitamins and occasional peanuts. I am trying to grow him up without alot of seeds because I am aware of health problems that may arise if he gets in excess. I was thinking he maybe a Mealy bc of the blue and yellow feathers coming up over the cere. But time will tell.
