Kingsley the Green Cheek Conure - hatchdate 1/30/13
I just got a 9 week old greencheek conure from a breeder who hand fed the babies and taught them the step up command. My new bird Kingsley is very good and doesn't bite, but he doesn't seem to enjoy being held at all, and when i put a hand in the cage to pick him up, no matter how slowly I move, he will hightail it to the other end of the cage like he is scared or uninterested. If he does step up onto my hand, he will fly right back to his perch immediately. I would love to have a cuddly, companionable bird- is this just something that takes time? Or does my bird just not like me- or being held? In working towards him getting used to me, should I spend MORE or LESS time trying to hold him? He really doesn't like it. I know he's still very young and everything is new to him, but I'm a little worried.

He's a baby, and you've only just picked him up; take it sloooow.

I'm not saying that there aren't birds that don't go batty to be around you right from the word go, but every bird is different. Worry about it after months, do not worry about it after a few days or weeks. Green Cheeks are generally gregarious, and if you're around a lot, you'll probably end up being best buddies.

Spend less time trying to hold him, and plenty of time being around him.

If he doesn't want to come to you, that's cool; show him that he does't need to fear your presence.
If he takes treats from your hands, that's great - don't push it by making advances.
If he steps up, handle in the same fashion, and let him sit there (or not).

Once he's comfortable and doesn't see you as a threat, you can advance to leaving the cage door open whilst you're near by. Talk, be encouraging, but be patient and relaxed; you'll only lengthen the process by trying to shorten it.

Clicker training is great, but you will want him to settle in first.

Start feeding him by hand. Offer him treats and regular food. Don't shove the food in his cage, just rest your hand near a perch and allow him to come investigate. This will help to start earning his trust.

He's just a baby still ... give it several months at least.:green2:
