I have a young rainbow lorikeet (don't know exactly how old because he was rescued) and when ever I pick him up to put him back in the cage, he starts biting my fingers that are holding him, hard. I've only had him for about 5 days, but he is hand tame and is very friendly other than that. What should I do? Because I don't want him to grow up with bad habits!:( Thanks for your help! :):green:

Sounds like he doesn't want to go back when you want him to. You'll probably need to work with him to establish limits/boundaries also. New home new rules & you really should start as soon as possibly...the longer a bird is left to its own devices, the harder it will be to correct bad habits.....

Why don't you try to stick/perch train him & use that to put him back in his cage?

my crimson belied conure did something similar.refused to step up on my finger. so I tried a perch, the first time it worked great. the second time he stepped up, then hopped off it.
the third time he ran away from it. As soon as he saw the perch he knew he was going back in the cage, he was always one step ahead. everynight when I put them to bed, I'd say 'ok guys, time for bed' then turn the lights on very low. before long Chili would make his way into his cage on his own.

I've had lories now for 20 years, and they are hyper and tend to be nippy birds. He may be hand tame, but he needs to get used to you. It could take a couple weeks or more. If you act afraid of him, it could make him more nippy. If he's not breaking the skin when he bites, then that is a very good sign. Start the no biting training right away. Just say in a firm voice, no biting. He'll get the message. It took a couple months to train my lory not to bite, but even now she's nippy. She knows she's not supposed to bite though so she never bites hard.
