Hey guys! My name is Dani, I'm new here, but I've been a bird owner pretty much my whole life. I also work with my local bird rescue here in Saskatchewan. I have an eclectus, so I thought I'd share his story!

Almost two years ago my mom and thought we'd stop by the local outdoor bird store to watch the local parrot rescue put on a little show. It was a great presentation, run by the rescue owners, Treena and Kelly, who are an energetic couple with a real passion for birds. They had of course, their amazing cockatoo Pebble, along with several other birds. To be honest, I don't remember what the other birds were, I just remember when they were showing off Marty the eclectus I thought he was too cute!

When Marty was hatched, it was instantly discovered that he was disabled. His legs are now bent at awkward angles and he doesn't have the ability to open and close one of his feet. He sits on everything, as that's his only option! He kinda pulls himself around with his beak, or uses it to stabilize himself as he walks. So at the end of the show, he was placed back in his carrier and set on a short table. When the audience got a chance to come talk to the rescue owners and see the birds, I was looking their cockatoo but glanced down and saw this little green face smushed up against the side of his carrier, looking back up at me.

They call this love at first sight, ladies and gents.

I asked to hold him and they placed him in my hands. I loved that little dude. I let my mom hold him and same thing, how could we say no?! We gave him back to Treena and Kelly, who were extremely wonderful by the way.
We went home talking about how great this rescue and the owners are, and of course how great Marty was. My mom decided to take a few trips to Treena and Kelly's and get better acquainted with Marty. Each trip went great, he was the most well behaved bird; and still is!

In the end, we adopted Marty, but we also fell in love with the rescue! Since then, we haven't left Treena and Kelly! We are always ready to help this couple in anything they need, whether it be a move to a new city (that happened- a ton of cage moving!) or a assisting with a pet expo, or helping to find ways to fundraise and getting prepared for new rescues. We have met so many like-minded individuals through the rescue and the local bird club; we live in such a small area that it was near impossible to find other parrot lovers! The rescue has been nothing but a total blessing.

So Marty is basically the definition of "you never know what's around the corner". We never expected to walk into a small bird presentation and adopt one of their parrots and then join their rescue and join the local bird club! It's awesome what life can have in store, and I hate to think what amazing things we would have missed out on if we had decided not to go that day. :green:
