A cockatiel named Poptart
Hello,
I am still so very new to the bird world so this is probably a silly question. We have had Poptart for almost 2 weeks, he/she is only 3 months old and when I took poptart out it was making these real light squealing noise. I took a video but could not upload it. Poptart has been doing it since I took the cover off the cage (About 45 min). I just want to make sure Poptart is ok. I have never really heard that noise. I am a nervous new mom :)

Poptart might just be trying to 'talk' to you - young cockatiels 'squeak' when they want to play, eat, get attention, even poop sometimes. She might be starting to see you as her flock-mates now that she's been around you for two weeks.

Make sure it is a squeak, and not a wheeze. A wheeze is something completely different, and may be a concern.

When he/she does that it almost sounds like a squeaky wheel! I looked in Poptarts cage he/she was out of millet, so I put more in and now Poptart is very happy!! poor baby, Poptart has seed & pellet mix along with millet and he/she eats throughout the day. I guess poptart wanted the millet! :)

Well millet is a favourite of cockatiels, so it doesn't surprise me :p

Was Poptart weaned onto pellets/seed mix? Do check the bowl making sure there's food within, they usually would get the seeds first so make sure it's not just seed husks. You can upload videos to YouTube, Photobucket, or any sites that does video then post the link within here.

K I finally was able to view videos off my phone after installing the new adobe flash player off the web since it's not available in the store....ugh....anyways...

That is a baby behavior! Make sure Poptart is eating well! It will eventually go away, just give Poptart some growing up time.

Thank you!! I was freaking out for a min there, Poptart eats lots of millet and I see him/her drink water and eat the seed pellet mix. Poptart seems pretty happy and healthy. Least I won't panic when I hear that again! <3

I've been raising Cockatiels for 17 years....nothing to worry about except the weight part needs to be monitored to be sure. :)

Yes it is a mommie call basically, a begging behavior for food. That's why I kept mentioning the need to monitor the food intake and weight.

Right, so weigh Poptart everyday ??

When we got the baby Plett I built a small "T" stand that I would zero out on the gram scale, for the first 2 months I weighed her everyday

Joe

At the beginning of fledge it is not unusual for them to drop weight, they do that for flying. Then they will pack on a bit of weight afterwards around 3 months old or so.

Definitely sounds like baby 'tiel food calling! If you look up "cockatiel hand feeding" on Youtube, you'll find baby tiels making the same/similar noise!

Mikey is correct, make sure your baby is still eating well and maintaining weight!

Spike does that sound when she wants her baby food, and when she's eating her mushed veggies.

I have noticed that anytime Poptart is out of millet, he begins making that noise! As soon as i put more millet in he is very content! He is eating very well and he does not feel skinny at all. I have been feeding him bits of apple also. I made an appointment with a local Avian vet on Friday to get a well check and to get established as a patient. I have also noticed he cuddles up to my neck and grinds his beak.( I am just saying him cause I feel bad calling Poptart it..LOL ) Thanks again for all the advice!
