My Cages

I have one really large cage I actually set up only half of it the other half is outside otherwise i won't have a livingroom, when i had Romeo my molucan Cockatoo before i sent him to sanctuary we tried everything for over a year to calm him down he became very aggressive and was to the point of going after the dogs my husband and the other birds, the other birds would hide in the corner, petco had a sale on this smaller cage for 30.00 we figured we would put romeo in time out for a little while everytime he misbehaved but it turned out he loved it lol and wanted to be in it all the time but we couldn't do that there not that much room, anyway that cage came in handy i used tie straps to attach to bigger cage so the baby Rowdy can get used to other birds and vice versa i working out real well. we will be moving the cages into the front room this weekend.

WOW! Rowdy is 4 months old, correct? That is one atrociously tiny cage he is in.

When I brought home my B&G, he was also only 4 months, but he was put into a real cage (permanent cage) from day 1.

And I would never dream of housing mine together.

When you get a parrot your home is no longer yours. It belongs to them and soon all your friends and family know it. PLEASE go and get the other half of this cage and put your feathered friends in separate cages and then go and get a BIG cage for the macaw.

It truly breaks my heart to see that.

And where are the toys? That cage should be filled with toys?

As for the smaller cage...the $30 one...please only use it as an emergency cage.

We would love to see pictures of your cages after you get them moved into the other room this weekend.

the cage is only used as an emergency cage and rowdy does not stay in there all day he is mainly out. as for toys as i mentioned i am moving the cages I had to take them out. to relocate them. and when they are in the birds come out and rather sit on top of cage and not play with the toys at all. Rowdy will be sleeping probably on a big perch my husband just built it is unfinished still have to add ladder food cups and toys he downstairs working on it now. it is pretty big...I cannot add the 2nd part of the cage it not enough room in my home for it. i will be getting another cage for the smaller birds and rowdy will go in big one alone when time comes.

The small black cage that you said was from petco looks like a dog crate...if that's the case, then it's toxic to birds. Dog crates are made with metals and coatings that are harmful and deadly to parrots. Just wanted to let you know

Such as lead and zinc.

I brought the small cage to the vet to make sure it was doable I also asked Marc from parrot world. my bird is not in any danger and does not spend much time in the cage at all. he is a small baby and can barely crack a shell much less pull the paint off the metal. I used the cage cage before with other birds and they are still alive and well for years...

The smaller "cage" it could be a DOG kennel. If so, if is meant to temporarily restrain a Yorkshire Terrier sized dog, not provide a permanent living house for any creature. If it is indeed one of those travel carriers that look like crates, the above is still true. I'm sorry, but you've been fed some very bad advice.

i wasn't fed any advice i bought it i had it used it simple as that, it is not the smallest cage it is big enough for a medium size dog and definitly for a bird for a nit of time as i mentioned it is NOT a permanent home for nothing it is used as a travel crate and when i bought the bird i had it with me, mark from parrot world put the bird in it. Rowdy does not really do anything in it if I go out he goes in because i have other animals and don't want him to get hurt. my bigcage is 4ft all sides and 5ft deep which is bigger then what the biggest one the web sight showed me to purchase for my bird.

Dr, I hope you don't think people are trying to jump all over and judge you. They merely want to help you be the best owner you can be. I want to be honest and say writing is not your strong suit, so I think some miscommunication could have happened here.

If I'm reading your post correctly, I think the confusion here is you posted what is actually a situation that is currently in transition, with temporary housing. This was not very easy to extract from your original post, since you say you wanted to show us your cages. This is why everyone reacted the way they did. A large bird in a tiny crate will upset almost anyone, even with clear qualification. I think this was the mistake you made here: It might have been clearer to wait until everything was settled before showing everyone.

Regarding the dog crate, everyone is right: this should be nowhere near your bird, ever, even temporarily. There are more appropriate and safer temporary housing options out there.

Your birds are beautiful, and I know I speak for everyone when I say we would love to see more photos of your lovely friends. Can't wait to see the finished housing as well

I was informed by Marc he should not be put in a big cage for at least 1-2 months which would make him 6 months. I do however have another cage that the smaller ones will go in if i go out for the evening and the big macaw would go in the big one. Nothing you see here is permanent. Someone else wrote on here that maybe i am feeling people are attacking me Yeah maybe that has something to do with it. I am Not a new bird owner i have had birds for 20 years. this is my 1st with a macaw.

I'm sorry you feel that we are attacking you, drveunutz. We all tend to get in a bit of a tizzy when we see certain things out of our concern for your feathered babies. I think what the store owner was trying to insinuate by that is that being in a large cage could be dangerous IF your new addition was having difficulty being articulate or had yet to develop strong perching muscles to stabilize himself.

However, you can still place your macaw in the cage size appropriate for him. All you need to do instead is ensure that his perches are not high above ground by creating an elevated barrier (ie. Using plywood that is covered with towels and not chewable, or more preferably using fibre glass, raising the grate, etc) so the fall from said perches isn't too far or harmful if/when it happens. It's very common practice for baby birds rather than placing them in an all too small or potentially unsafe environment.

Rowdy the macaw is now in the biggest cage and I bought a smaller bird cage for gizmo.
