So....curiosity killed the cat...I had the chance to have my lil Rio surgical sexed by his vet and opted not to put "him" through that just to find out if "he" was a he or she....well my curiosity got to me and I went ahead and had him DNA sexed with a couple feathers....Anyways $20 later and I find out my lil guy is really my lil GIRL!! I almost feel a little disapointed, why, I have no clue, maybe because she has been a "he" since we brought her home. The breeder thought for some reason she was a he and so we just went with that! Anyways...now I have a cute lil girl instead of a lil boy!
I think with egg laying and egg binding and all that I thought in my mind it would be easier to have a boy and not ever to have to deal with all that. I hope that I dont have to deal with it, but I guess now I know to watch out for nesting signs and such!
Ok well thanks everyone I just had to tell someone the news "IT'S A GIRL!" haha
PS if ya'll know of anything different I need to do with a girl bird please let me know! lol

Haha! Isn't that a hoot? How long have you had Rio before you learned this? I often wonder this about my "little boy". I always just assumed the previous owners were right in calling him a he.

Riio,

I had the same thing happen to me last weekend. I took Max to the vet, and my vet happens to have a Senegal parrot as well. Our stories are fairly similar, I got mine from Craigslist, I am the third person to have Max, Max is assumed to be a boy.....

Well, Dr. B also rehomed a Senegal parrot, Cheerio. They also assumed that Cheerio was a boy.

So we talked for a while and meanwhile, Dr. B has Max in a towel on 'his' back. And she said to me, "Our stories are pretty similar. They thought Cheerio was a boy, but I got there and discovered that Cheerio was a girl." I said, "Oh, well they said Max was a boy, but I don't know, I have had something tell me it is a female, but I am not sure." And Dr. B said, "Well, I can tell you that I am 85% certain you have a little GIRL."

:) I didn't have any blood work done for sexing, I figured I can do that next visit. My little girl had enough to go through the first visit :)
