So my 2nd hand 10 yr old macaw :blue1:that i got GRILLED for getting is doing just fine, but i have a few questions:
Is he supposed to sleep perched? Lately he has been trusting me more and very cuddly at night, he will lay his head on my chest while i pet him and he will close his eyes slowly, but for bed i put him in his cage, is there a "bird bed" of sorts i am unaware of? is sleeping perched normal? is it more comfortable for him to rest his head?

He keeps climbing up to my shoulder
, i do not trust him and it freaks me out i am so scared he is going to be frightened by something and bit my face, how do i get him down?!

He makes this awful noise at night, like grinding his beak together WHYYY

Why does he lick my fingers
,(and clothes) i am so afraid he is going to bite it off but he will just put my finger in his mouth lol:blue1:
Thanks

They are supposed to sleep perched, and they grind their beaks just before going to sleep its like them saying I am content. Licking fingers is just something they do to explore their surroundings. Everything you are asking are simple questions that you should have read about before purchasing a parrot. All the things he his doing is completley normal and something you can easily read about on the internet.
If you are afraid of him you shouldn't have purchased him.

I agree totally with Cdog, these are normal Parrot behaviours and before taking on such a large parrot you really should have done a lot more research. I have always wanted a Macaw but once my kids were grown and I had time to devote to a parrot I did a lot of research and decided I was nowhere near ready to take on a macaw and needed to start with a smaller parrot. I too was concerned about their bite and knew I could not take on a pet I was scared of as parrots are so intuitive they pick up those feelings and react accordingly.
I wish you well but I think you really do need to spend some time reading up on what you need to know.

Like Roxy said, you'll probably have to do the whole 'switch arms a lot' when he starts trying to climb on to your shoulder.

You could try o raise your hand when he scoots to your shoulder, so your hand becomes the higher point.

Or you can tuck your elbow into your body and make the angle really difficult for him to climb (though, it really doesn't stop them from grabbing your clothing, lol)

You think beak grinding is awful? My bird woke up screaming 4 times last night.. She screams more at night than during the day.. I forgot to cover her since I was out late, and I paid for it. @.@;

Curiosity got the better of me when this person responded, but now I'm really sorry I took her off my ignore list. Will someone please quote her post when part of her face goes missing because her macaw bit her, so I can gloat? Thanks!

Melanie,

I can't apologize for others, but I do hope you come back. You are absolutely correct, this IS the internet, it's a parrot forum for sharing knowledge and not beating each other up.

I don't mean to offend anyone with any of my posts, but there is aboslutely no reason why you should keep harping on this woman. Yes, she didn't listen when we advised her not to get a bird. The bird likes her, she enjoys it, and she's coming for help and advice so she can LEARN. That's more than what most people who get large parrots do. If she feeds it, plays with it, buys it toys and tries to learn as much as she can, then I'm happy, birds happy, that should be it. Its better than what some birds get.

Instead of berating a person on something they already did, I would much rather help them. At least she's looking for assistance where most wouldn't.

Yes, she could have done some reading. Why not point her to those links of training websites instead of telling her she should have thought about that in advance? If you can't offer anything helpful then don't waste your time typing a response. It doesn't make you look cool (and this is not directed to anyone.)

Sorry if I sound a bit frustrated, but I see this a lot on message boards and its one of my pet peeves. It's like I'm back in high school again.

I'll stop typing now before I go off on a rant about the internet and how text comes off more blunt than it should and blah blah blah. Hopefully what I wrote made sense. >.>
