I am relatively new to caring for a parrot but have taken over care of my mothers Alexandrine as I have more time to put into her. We have had her for around 4 months and have been trying to build up trust. She comfortably goes in and up on top of her cage whenever she likes. She will take food from my hands but if I put my hands near her to try to get her to step up she will run away. Lately though she has been climbing or flying down from her cage every now and then onto the ground. She will allow me to pick her up then no problems and will happily climb up and stay on my shoulders. Any advice for being able to get her onto my hand from the top of her cage??
First, welcome to the forums and congrats for giving care to your mother's bird ! ! !
Though it might seem so, you question's not easily answered, without some added info.....how old is this Alex? how long did your mother have it? Before moving her to your house, were you able to able to interact with her like you want to at your house? Were you able to just stick your hand out & pick her up/have her step up all the time? Where was her cage placed at your mother's house and where is it placed in your house? What is different from your house & your mother's house.....hers louder & more active or is yours? Is her house more open or is yours?
Did your mother handle this bird on a whim...just hold her hand out & the bird just stepped up? Did your mother do any training with the bird or was it pretty much left to its own devices?
Many Alex's tend to be one person birds...has this bird ever shown that it is a one person bird?
Good luck.....
