Parrots
alexandrines
I recently got Duggu (his name) as a gift from my distant relative.
I dont have much idea about Parrots and after lots of research found out that that he is an alexandrines.
Now i am trying to read as much as i can but there are certain things which i am not able to find off the internet and hench this post.

1. He came in a small cage and i bough him a big one so that he can move around .
2. when even i come close to him he tries to bite my figure.
3. sometimes he turns backwards and swings his head , i still dont know what it means?
4. he is always trying to bite the cage and break it off .
5. I give him tomato, apple and oranges to eat.
6. i am a working professional and thats why i am not in my home form 11AM to 9AM, during this time he is all alone in the home ( i live with my wife and she is also a working professional) , i make sure i have given him enough food , what else can i do .

what should i do so that he can be tamed, he starts talking or feels comfortable and i can let him free from the cage me.

i want to make sure i can do the best i can for him and understand him better.

How old is duggu?
Cage - get the biggest you can
Biting - he still doesn't trust you buddy... Give him time. Spend more time with him.
Cage biting - Alexandrines need a lot of cheering toys... If you don't provide enough then the perch will have it :)
Food - don't give tomatoes, limit oranges... There are a lot of threads on food... Please follow them. Their feathers need a lot of vitamins...
Time - quality time is important... Not quantity... Have him with you when you're watching TV... Or having your breakfast... Give him pieces of apple then
Spend lots of quality time...
Alexandrines are amazingly smart & gentile birds...
Spend quality time with him

sent on the go

Thank-you, for taking this Parrot into your home!

Parrots are totally different from all other common Pets! They have no reason to trust Humans, so we need to create a reason to trust us. With time and good practice they will become a very important member of your home!

Take all timelines and expectations and forget about them. The new timeline is the rate in which your Parrot is comfortable interacting with both of you! Start by place a chair next to his cage and reading a loud. You can read this Forum or paperwork from your work, to your Parrot it does not matter. For your Parrot you are being near and not presenting an danger.

Target: Only Good Things Happen when Humans Are Around!

Parrots are highly motivated by food. Determine what his favorite food is and remove it from his daily offering and let your wife and you become the only source for that item. Once you develop a reason for coming to you and your wife, they will continue to come more often, since only good things happen when Humans are around!

At this point, you have developed a base Trust and that can be built on with additional steps in getting the treat.

Example: First time, you clearly set the treat on a perch (or a flat surface), and the Parrot goes to the perch and eats it. That is repeated several times until the Parrot sees you coming and moves to that perch. Next, the treat is placed on a perch near the door and the Parrot goes to the perch and eats the treat. Very quickly, the Parrot will move to that perch when the Human comes with the Treat. At first this process is very slow, but as stated, once the trust comes, everything starts coming faster.

With time and effort, you will quickly have a Parrot that will greet you when you come home and miss you when you leave.

Contact calls are very important to the Group structure that Parrots are naturally apart. Talk to your Parrot all the time! Use common Words, like the Parrot's name. Add Hello in front of their name. When you leave the room, say goodbye and when you return say Hello. When you use words tied to your actions, they will place your actions to to words. Overtime, they can come to a point that that they may use those words. What you want, five years from now you need to set all that in place early.

Use the Search button at the top of the page under the Banner. It will provide you access to the great knowledge as part of the Forum.

If you make this Fun, you and your wife will enjoy it and your Parrot will quickly join in on the Fun!

Enjoy!

Below is based on my experience... but individual birds are always different :D

Alexes are not fussy eaters. They are what I will term Foodies :) they will definitely try new food stuff. But if duggu wasn't introduced to different foods early he will be a little adamant.

One of the ideas that worked for me was sitting next to Hulk and I will chomp on some new food. Something that is crunchy like carrots, guava, corn... Curiosity will take over & he will want to try it too. You're all part of a flock so he will want in on all that you're doing. So he will want to try it too. If he shows some curiosity and comes to you give him a piece and see his reaction. Sell the new food... do a lot of crunching sounds and show the happiness in your face. Be a clown it helps :D

The thread that Theone has posted has a lot of information.

Below is a list that Hulk eats [veggies cooked a bit is better as it breaks down the fiber and helps in absorption]
Carrot
Pumpkin
Okra
Green Chilly [in moderation]
Bell Peppers
Bitter gourd [in moderation]
Cucumber
Raddish (with the leaves too)
Spinach (Palak) [in moderation]
Apple
Guava
Grapes [in moderation]
Water Melon
Papaya
Pineapple
Zucchini
Sprouts (anything sprouted is a favorite top on the list is Chikpeas (Chana))
Cooked Brown Rice
Cooked Pulses [in moderation]
Pellets [zupreem]
Almonds
Walnuts

Be patient and keep trying don't give up.
