Moving cage questions

Hey all! It's been a while since I was on here. I was told we're (my grandma and I) selling the house a week or two before it was put on the market, and then we got an offer, and the house is now sold. Annnnd now we're waiting on our closing date. Thankfully, we have an apartment (bird friendly, I did not even look at apartments that said no birds) all lined up. But here in lies the problem. My house is closing on the 30th of September, and we aren't allowed into our apartment before the 1st of October.

Another great thing-- we have a hotel willing and able to take Callum, Pidgey, and my dog for a few days (and it has a pool, so added bonus that I am definitely taking advantage of!) I also have rats, but they're in boarding. I don't think Callum would be able to handle being boarded. He's very attached to me and I worry what would happen if he only got to see me for 45 minutes a day and wasn't allowed to fly around the room.


Anyways, would it be alright to put Callum into a smaller (temporary) cage for the few days we're moving? I don't know the exact dimensions, but it will still allow him to turn around, sleep, stand on various perches, etc. I plan to give him toys, food, water, etc. Ideally, I'd love to let him have out-of-cage time and I will try, but hotel rules are rules and I don't want to be kicked out when we're technically homeless.

Or should I try to keep him in his home cage? I would prefer this, but it is tall and heavy.

We recently moved from California to Washington and my conure had to spend about two weeks in his travel cage. He didn’t seem to mind at all but we did allow him out and about in the hotel room for a few hours a day. But during the drive itself he had to spend quite a few hrs in it a day for two days. He’s very well behaved though when it comes to chewing and noise, for the most part.. so I felt pretty comfortable letting him out in the room.

He had his favorite toy which he destroyed happily, a ball, rope perch and that’s about it, aside from food bowls of course. The cage we use is this one though; fairly pricey but If you shop around you might be able to find it cheaper... if I remember correctly it was around 40 when we got it.

Super roomy and sturdy.

I don’t know your conure but I think he’ll be fine as long as you’re around. Hopefully he doesnt screech every time you leave the room like my spoiled brat LOL

That is a big move! It only ends up being a few states, but I'm moving to an apartment down the road lol. It happens to be right around the park I play Pokemon GO on, so Callum and I (if he ever like his harness or I just get one of those Pak-o-bird backpacks) could go on walks. Anyways, I digress.

Callum's a chewer (like most GCCs) so I think I'll end up buying his favorite toys and giving him lots of napkins, tissues, and toilet paper to tear up to keep him preoccupied. I think the travel cage I'm using is about that same size. Not as nice looking though lol.


Callum is a caller. I call it whining in an endearing sort of way. The way he calls for me just reminds me of a child whining. He doesn't like when I leave the room, but he has gotten better since he's been allowed more free time. Our biggest concern is him calling for me while we're in the apartment or the hotel. Thankfully, he and I have been working on a quiet command and he's been very responsive thus far. Just takes a moment to get his attention and for him to listen lol. Typical behavior of a 2-year-old GCC.

Actually, one of our concerns is that we have to be out of the apartment by 11AM and can't go to our apartment until the signing at 1PM, so Callum, Pidgey, and my dog may actually have to ride in the car with me to college lol. Grandma will be in the car with them to make sure they're all okay. My dog usually whines up a storm when I leave and I'm curious to see if Callum will too. I would not go into class, but grandma is pretty adamant about me going in no matter what.

So, Callum is a spoiled brat. Grandma always says he's spoiled without hesitation. Which I don't mind. As long as he doesn't bite and doesn't get all ornery with me, I don't care.

My hunch is a small temporary cage filled with toys and plenty of attention will suffice. You want to balance his comfort with the reality of hotel living for a short time!

I don't see any issue at all.

I got Skittles a travel cage (its actually more like a VERY small budgie cage) Its 16x11x9 which is VERY small even for a budgie. But I just put the perch close enough to the front so that his tail doesn't get ruffled or stick out the bars and he's fine. But he's also never in it for more than four hours and he's only in it when I take him outside or to the vet, but even then he's never given me an issue. In fact just this past summer when I took him in to see the vet, after his exam and I went to put him back in the travel cage, the vet said "I love how he just goes right in".

So I think if you got a cage big enough for him to move around in and allowed room for some toys, he should be fine. I'd aim for nothing smaller than 14"x12".

Personally, I think boarding him away from you would be more stressful for him than being in a smaller cage for a day or two.

Just a word of advice, get a lock clip just to be safe.


Also, check with your new landlord to make sure they let *cough* people *cough* live there too. I can totally see being bird friendly, but people are a totally different element.

Thank you all for the advice! I meant to reply before, but moving got hectic very quickly and I haven't had the chance before now.

We ended up using a temporary cage for him. He had a couple of his favorite perches, toys, a food and water bowl, and he was relatively happy. Heck, I don't think he even noticed or cared lol. He was let out a lot while we were in our hotel room, so he was happy with that. We spent a lot of our time cuddled up in bed watching Netflix and YouTube.

Now that we've moved, it's a perfect excuse to clean out his cage and remove toys he couldn't care less about or had absolutely destroyed within the past week or two lol. Any toys he doesn't like will be perfect for my rats lol. And surprisingly, he's already perfectly adjusted. You think he'd have lived in this apartment his entire life. Our only problem is now teaching him that he can be a quiet, happy bird. I haven't met our neighbors, so I don't know what they think, partly because I'm nervous what they'll say about him lol.

(And yes, Callum is allowed at this apartment, we're not trying to sneak him in, just be courteous of our neighbors because they probably don't want a little bird being very loud).
