Moving birds to Puerto Rico?

Does anyone know anything about the Dept of Natural Resources regulations on moving with parrots to Puerto Rico?? My husband and I are in the process of looking for land there - I spent two hours on the phone this late afternoon with bureaucratic agencies trying to figure out if I can bring my birds!!! I'm in a panic - all the offices are closed now and all I know is that the birds have to be "legal" -- of course my birds are legal - but during a conversation half in Spanish and half in English I concluded that it's VERY likely that Zeke - my Red Lored Amazon - can't live in Puerto Rico. If anyone has any (reassuring) experience with this I'd love to hear it or it's going to be a very long night!!!

I know only a little about the US's side of traveling or exiting from the US. You can take a pet(one) bird, even a CITIES 1 parrot.I would think any family members could also get a permit for exporting a bird. Somehow maybe you could take the whole flock ,as far as the US is concerned. I don't know if Puerto Rico will allow import of a CITIES 1 parrot or not.

Thank you all. The DNR officer who issues permits for pets was out sick last week - but I think I've found the person who can resolve my concerns. So I'm crossing fingers that all works out.

I'm in the same quandry as you. I'm thinking of moving to St. Thomas VI and taking my two birds along at a minumum of two years. But I can only give you what information that I have found for the US and St. Thomas.:

1. I have to contact the Department of Aggriculture and obtain a form that allows me to bring my birds into the islands. This form MUST be filled out by an avian vet and returned to the Dept. of Aggriculture no earlier than 20 days before you leave.

2. They MUST get a clean bill of health from their avain vet.

3. The birds need to be banded or micro chipped to prove that they are or were bred birds and not wild caught. (This is very important if you decide to bring them back to the states).

4. You will have to locate and airline that will allow your birds. If they are small enough to fit into the smallest size container, they can travel in the cabin with you under the seat, if not then they will have to go into luggage or cargo. There is only a couple of airlines that allow birds, American DOES NOT. Delta is one of the few that still allows well behaved birds to travel.

There are only certain times that birds can travel by plane especially in cargo due to the heat while sitting on the tarmack. So Summer is off limits.

Something you may also want to consider, is if you plan to return to the US to live with your birds, they will have to be quarantined for 30 days from what I'm reading. Now, they can elect to be quarantined at their home for the 30 days if they meet certain requirements and if customs will allow it (there's no guarantee here).

So if I do decide to move to St. Thomas for a while, I will rehome my birds. I won't put them through any type of quarantine.

Welcome to the forums! Please note six years have passed since this thread was updated. My guess is the regulations are much the same, but you will need to verify.
