hello.
I've just adopted a macaw called Harold. I'm learning all I can and have some simple questions. Do our birds get mites or other parasites always ? And if so what do you guys use on your macaws to rid them of them ? There are so many products out there and I'm scared of using the wrong one. I took him yesterday to see a generic vet and I've asked them to do stool tests. I feel I need to have him checked over though by an Avian Vet but the nearest is an hour away and I just want to keep him stress free.
Also is this a UK based forum ?

Thank you.

Welcome and be welcomed. This is truly an International forum, we have many members in the UK, Australia, the US, and the middle East and the Pacific Rim.

Now to your question - I don;t know, as my parrot has never had mites, BUT you should have your new Macaw checked by a Certified Avian Vet or CAV. It will be worth the hour drive. A CAV is a specialized vet who has taken additional courses of study to become certified for avian practice. Birds are totally different from cats and dogs, medically. Also it is a very good idea because you will have a 'wellness' base line if in the future Harold does get sick.

As far as the ride there and back, some birds love car rides ( mine does) and some dont and some even get car sick. If Harold is going to be in a carrier, you can prop the carrier up so he can see out the windows, or if he is stressed you can mostly cover the carrier with a dark cloth or towel.

Thank you so much for your advice.
Yes I agree, it will be an investment on our future to see a specialised Avian vet and get all my doubts checked out and start off on the right foot.
Thank you!!
