Miss my bird

I recently rehomed my female sun conure. I owned her for a year and 1/2 and in that time she traveled in my RV, lived at home with me, and also lived on the coast with me. She was just not a good match for me and my husband because of her ear splitting screeching, and because she was unfriendly to family and friends. Otherwise I really loved her and miss her. She went to an aviary specializing in poicephulus birds. I have owned cockatiels, lovebirds and parakeets. Here's what I want in a bird.....

Friendly
Enjoys being petted but not all day
Talking is a plus but not required
Small poops!

I'm looking at Indian ringnecks, poicephulus, cockatiels and your suggestions. I don't want to put another bird through a bonding experience and then rehome it. I kept my cockatiel for 12 years. Any suggestions? I got my conure without researching the breed. Won't make that mistake again!

Welcome to the forums, sorry things did not work out with your Sun. Hopefully she will be happy and well cared for at her new home.

Don't have experience with the species you mentioned, but other members may be in a better position to give useful advice!

Are you willing to trade sun conure screeching for constant chattering? IRN are known to be little chatterboxes and aren't very keen on being petted or touched, usually. From what you have said I think a cocktail would be a good fit. Plus they have a cute head feather that tells you how they feel.

Not being mean here, but your requirements based on your life style really fits a small dog that fits that list. Clearly not all small dogs do, but by providing that list to your Vet will result a very short selection list. Also, a web search with your list should also provide results.

IMHO, your list and life style is just to confining to assure you will be happy with one species over another. Yes, you could 'get lucky' and find a Parrot that fits perfect, but!!!

We sublet a basement "apartment" from a couple with an IRN. Literally a fifth of Kiwi's (my large male amazon) size, but gave him a good run for the money on which bird was louder! And the IRN was chatty, frequently vocalizing with a higher pitched screech. Now, I was never personally bothered by their birds vocalizations at all, but if a sun was too loud for your personal comfort level, an IRN very well could be too. I will also note their IRN was a mostly 1 person bird and seemed to have a strong preference for the wife, was ok with her husband but wasn't particularly friendly towards strangers (many parrots aren't, it is perfectly normal for them to be wary of people they do not interact with daily).

Have you considered a budgie (perhaps the larger "English" variety) or parrotlet? Or another cockatiel? It sounds as though one of the very small parrots may be most suited to what you're looking for in a bird. Look for ones hand raised by a competent, trustworthy breeder who has a good reputation for producing friendly babies instead of shopping at a local chain pet store.

Not sure an IRN would work so well! They do talk well, constantly. They also let out some ear piercing screams when you don't get 'it' right, and who knows what 'it' might be! I can't stroke either of mine, although one is well attached, bonded and very sociable. They're just not that kind of bird. Of course, I only speak from personal experience and stereotyping.
